University of Scouting

Postby agdparker » Wed Feb 08, 2012 4:30 pm

Our council is running it's University of Scouting this weekend and I was asked to teach some classes, which I was glad to do. I was surprised, however, to see that I would be required to pay, even attending as an instructor. While the amount is small ($5), I was wondering if that is common for UoS events put on by other councils. I assume it is to cover the cost of lunch and the patch that I'll receive, so it's not a fleecing to be sure.

Ours is this weekend also, and I am an instructor for one class. The fees are $20 per adult; $15 per staff An optional boxed lunch is available for an additional $8. I wish I lived near you.

I did get to attend winter camp (12/26-31) for free, as I was a MBC for three sessions of Bird Study with no assistant. During the morning periods I assisted in Environmental Science.

IMHO everyone pays. Especially if food is involved. When I was Lodge Adv, I paid for each activity. When I was Course Director for Powder Horn I paid . I have been Area Venturing Chair for 11 years and have paid for each Venturing Summit.

I taught at ours, which was held last month on SMU campus. I paid a reduced fee. I presumed it was to cover cost of lunch (box lunch & bottel of water) and supplies, patches, etc. I think regular cost was $25 & I paid $15.

The fees may also include building use rental. It can be hard to find locations for free these days.

The building was free (I helped arrange it), but the lunch was more than worth $5. Given what others are charged, it was a bargain.

I'm happy for you. My lunch was less than worth $8, which is what I had to pay on top of the $15 staff fee. I did get to attend other classes, though, including Conducting the BOR. Good thing, because we had 8 BORs to do two days later.

I just taught at my councils Scouter Saturday also. Paid basically enough to cover expenses, and lunch. Seemed fair to me.
