Get your own copy of the Senior Patrol Leader Handbook and read a chapter or two every night before bed. That will take less than a week. Then get your own copy of the Patrol Leader Handbook and do the same thing.

These books will really help you. Read them over and over, and follow their counsel.

The outgoing SPL tells you that there are two envelopes, labeled 1 and 2, that you can use the first two times you get into trouble.

Let's say you're on a campout and when the chuckboxes are opened, gear is missing, no matches, etc. The entire troop is furious with you. You open envelope number 1 and it says, "Blame the last SPL." This you do, and everyone is okay with that.

Later, at a court of honor, you e-mail instructions to everyone, telling them to bring refreshments, snacks, paper plates, etc. for the reception afterward. Unfortunately, you tell each person to bring paper cups, and they do. It's time for envelope number 2. You open it and it says, "Prepare two envelopes..."

Sorry. It's an old joke. Maybe you could make a skit out of it.

OK, you have completed NYLT. How long since you got out your notebook and notes and reviewed them?

I can promise that you will find things that you didn't recall being there, and that you will look at all of them differently now that you are SPL.

Seek guidance from your SM. The most important role of the SM is to mentor and train the youth leadership.

Have a meeting with him and find out his expectations for your performance. This is a job, and the SM is your boss.
