Unbelievable Sight - Eagle Medal Worn on Hat

My son and I just got back from summer camp.
When entering the camp-wide campfire last Sunday night I saw something that I just could not believe:

It was a Scouter (maybe mid-40s) in uniform wearing one of those cloth hats with the 1-2" brim that goes all the way around the head.

At the front-top edge of his hat was pinned an Eagle medal.

I was so flabergasted I (sadly) didn't confront him.

My old SM told all of us who made Eagle about wearing the badge by showing examples.

Maybe this scouter does not know the rules.

Unfortunately, I did not look for an Eagle knot above the left breast pocket.

We'll be attending this same camp at opening week again next year.
Hope to run into this guy again.....THEN I'll have the presence of mind to say something.

Yes I am Serious. There are many scouters that are proud to break the rules and these guys are Jerks and do not belong in Scouting. Whether it be Troop Rules,G2SS or Uniforming.
I would dare say that everyone that has ever earned Eagle know the Rules for wearing the Medal.
Remember this is only my opinion. ANd I can be very opininated.

Could be. I've met people who were (IMHO) jerks - even in Scouting.

There is another group of people that I wouldn't classify as jerks. They know the rules and just don't agree with them so they don't follow them. One I know has 5 Quality Unit Award patches on. Says, the Troop earned them and they need to be displayed.

I don't agree and I wouldn't do it, but that is different than a jerk. That's my opinion -- and like wagionvigil I can be opinionated as well.

That was part of my original concern....that the Eagle medal this guy was wearing on his hat was not HIS.

Did anyone bother to ask this gentleman why he was wearing an Eagle medal on his hat? Is it possible, if it isn't his, it is in memory of someone?

I have also seen a lot of members of the Disabled American Vets (DAV) and American Legion where medals on their hats. They know that medals belong on uniforms but I would not consider them jerks for wearing them on their hats.

Good point, about examples of Military medals worn in this same way. I have observed most of these are aftermarket examples of miniature medals, rather than the Issue types. But as for the Scouter, perhaps he didn't even know what it was. Many people can now buy these Eagles (and other medals) all over the place. I am one of the buyers, both for collecting and as gifts to qualified recipients.

So maybe he just thought it was a Scout item, and wore it innocently (though all Registered should know the rules)...but it could have been pointed out to him, in a discrete manner. As a Scout(er) should.
