Mixing Medals and Knots

Postby ThunderingWind » Sat Jan 26, 2008 11:35 am

I do not own an Insignia book (yet).

I have to attend my first formal Scouting occasion that asked for medals to be worn.

I only own one shirt. It has two knots on it. One knot has a medal version.

Do I take both knots off the shirt and only wear the medal or do I cover the knot with medal and wear a medal and knot?

The awards in question are the Venture Leaders Training Award (medal) and the Webelos Den Leader Award (knot only).

Medals

Postby riverwalk » Sat Jan 26, 2008 2:56 pm

It is said that medals may be worn when knots aren't used. But many people add the medal just for the formal setting. Some of ours did it again at the recent Dinner. Don't take knots off just to wear the medal. Just don't wear the medal with it all the time. And find more shirts when you can. It does help.

I haven't looked recently, but I believe that the strict official position is that the knot is not worn with the medal and that the medals are worn for formal occassions.

To me, the reasonable thing to do is just leave the knot on and wear the metal, too. In most cases you are looking at an hour or two for the formal occassion and it doesn't seem to me to be worth removing the knot (and perhaps having to rearrange the remaining ones) then putting it back. Just my opinion, but it is the same one that I tell my Scouts about the Youth Religious Award.

And, I agree with riverwalk. Get more shirts. Just see what happens during a week long summer camp with a single shirt.

Hmmm...never knew there were medals for the adult leadership knots. Howver, I know that for religous and Eagle awards you keep the knots on and pin the medal(s) to the flap.

Medals

Yeah all medals are worn the same way, yet only for proper events. Many don't know about the smaller medals (training and recognition ones) I think, due to having to purchase them. They may only be found now where I mentioned, but are possible. Five medals total are what a member may wear at one time.

I just received my Scouter's Training Award last night and got certificate and square knot, but not the medal. Guy said I would need to purchase that myself. No biggie.

This past Sunday, I received the LDS "On My Honor" medal and knot.

So I am up to three medals I can wear (Eagle, Scouter's Key and religious award).

Just need to find a formal place to wear them :)

What about the Council Annual Awards dinner? I am being recognized for being a James E. West donor.

Should I wear my medals then?

Absolutely. That's a perfect example of when to wear the medals.

Just found out I am doing a Friends of Scouting presentation tonight for a Cub Scout pack during their Blue & Gold banquet.

I will wear my medals, but would the OA sash be appropriate too?

Nope! The OA sash is only worn at OA Functions Or if you are officially representing the OA at some event. Your lodge flap identifies you as a mamber. ALso on this line a Scout should never wear their OA sash at any COH.

I remember that the OA sash should only be worn at OA function or other function identifying yourself as an OA member involved in service.

Thanks again to everyone. Hope I can get this pack to contribute to FOS.
