Working for a law enforcement agency, every time I hear the word "bolo" I immediatlely think "Be On The Look Out"

Our troop requires neckerchiefs UNLESS a scout has participated in a NYLT, Brownsea, or other leadership building opportunity, including high adventure-type programs (although none of our scouts have done this yet).

Our scouts can only wear a bolo if they have attended one of the above. Scouts who wear the bolos are looked up to, and some scouts who might not otherwise have experienced Brownsea or NYLT, consider attending JUST to be able to wear one.

About a fourth of our scouts are able to wear bolos.

The key question is who decided that this would be the rule, the adults or the scouts? I can see if the Charter Organization wanting to require neckerchiefs, then it can be an adult decision. Otherwise, it should IMHO be a PLC decision what the "standard" for the troop uniform should be, as long as it falls within the uniform guidelines of the BSA. (the boys do not have the right/authority to change that)

Our troop voted to wear bolos. The quote is right that the boy can not change the uniform guide of BSA. BUT, read the rules. It clearly states that the boys decide wether they will wear the neckerchief and how it will be tied AND the adults must follow what the boys decide. Had to "check" a few of our zelous leaders with regard to this.

PS Three foot length of leather makes a great bow for fire starting. = Bolo (or Woggle)

We wear a Troop neckerchief (which is handed out at Bridgeover cerimonies). I like the bolo's, but standing at 6'5" they look rediculous on me . . . too short and don't hang down past 2 shirt buttons!

According to the latest Adult Uniform Inspection Sheet 34048, headgear and neckwear for adults is optional, notwithstanding what the Scouts vote.

Read the "Insignia Guide" page 5. for clarification on the issue for adults and uniform.

Boy Scout neckerchiefs are optional. The Troop decides by vote, and all members abide by the decision. If the neckerchief is not worn, then the shirt is worn with open collar

Do I disagree with no neckerchief for my troop. You bet. Do I wear one? No. I would consider it disrespectful of their choice. We wear bolos, by the youth's choice.
