Eagle rank on Venturing uniform

Postby ccjj » Tue Jun 17, 2008 8:29 pm

I have searched the insignia guide, and I have asked my SE, but I still have a question....

Can an 18 year old who earned Eagle wear the patch on his Venturing uniform? My son is on camp staff and he says that there are a couple of staffers (they are 18 and 19 years old) who are in crews that wear their Eagle rank on their Venturing uniform. He wants me to send his patch to him so he can put it on his crew uniform. I told him I would check and see if it could be worn there.

Thanks in advance

I thought at that age they would only be able to wear the Eagle Scout knot.

I think once you turn 18 you go the the knot not the badge.

I did some more looking and I did find on USSCOUTS.org that according to the Venturing Handbook, the Eagle rank patch may be worn by an 18+ year old on his Venturing uniform. It also stated that the National Venturing Cabinet reccomends wearing the knots, but that they may wear the patch.

Venturers can wear badges of rank through age 20 including Eagle.

Youth members wear the badge, adult members wear the knot. Age is not relevant.

Here it is:

Badges of Rank Are for Youth Members
In Scouting, the advancement program is intended for youth members only. Scouters should neither seek awards designed for youth members nor wear them on the Scouter uniform except for square knots representing the Arrow of Light Award, Eagle Scout Award, Venturing Silver Award, Quartermaster Award, or religious emblems earned as a youth member.

http://www.scouting.org/media/insigniaguide/03.aspx

You are a Venturing youth member through age 20.

If only adults over 20 would stop wearing their Eagle patches...

The opening post leaves me scratching my head. Why would a Venturer get the idea that he must remove his Eagle patch when he turns 18? He is still in the crew and other members of his crew still wear it, so what prompted him to take it off in the first place?

Scoutmasters have nothing to do with the Venturing program. If a boy is dual registered in both a Troop and a Crew, he should be wearing the proper uniform to each meeting. A SM would never see the boy in his Venturing uniform, only his Boy Scout uniform.

A boy can earn Star thru Eagle while in, and thru, the Venturing program (he does not need to be registered in a Troop). A Venturing youth member wears his rank patches until he is no longer a youth member. That is 21 years of age (not 20).

Pardon my ignorance, but can a Venture continue to work on Star/Life/Eagle requirements after they are 18 or just Venture advancement? Seems kind of futile and i don't think any would, but is it allowed?

They stop BSA Advancement at 18 but can earn the Ventruring awards until their 21st BD. They are considerd a youth untui that date so therefore they can wear the Eagle Patch.

I figured but:

The "and thru" part confused me.

Thru the Venturing program means just that.

They do not have to belong to a Troop, hold a Troop POR, or do anything with a Troop at all. All of the requirements for the ranks of Star thru Eagle can be accomplished within the program of a Crew or Ship.

My sons EBOR was shortly before his 18th birthday. We received confirmation from National after his 18th birthday. His crew is fairly new and we just purchased a Venturing uniform for him for summer camp staff. That is why I was questioning the wearing of the Eagle rank on that uniform.

As you have read he may wear it. I am Very Involved in Venturing in the NER and I get this question alot. It usually comes after a SM sees a 20 year old with his eagle Patch and has the Nerve to say something.

Thanks to all.

I just wanted to be sure, before I mailed his patch to him so he can sew it on.

He is at camp for the summer, then comes home for a couple days, then leaves for boot camp. It is hard enough having him gone for the summer, but then knowing he will be gone for 3 more months, is harder.
