Postby nlbp21 » Fri Jan 12, 2007 6:58 pm

Here's my question, when a kid passes his Eagle BOR and his Application gets approved should he put on his Eagle patch? As I understand it he can but should he? What do y'all think? Sould he wait untill his COH?

No, he should wear it as soon as he has earned it. Just like any other rank.

Actually in my troop we wait untill a COH to get our rank patches. Sometimes Eagles do that and sometimes they don't in our troop. I believe I've seen pictures put on BSA stuff of pinning the medel over a Life badge so I didn't know. I'm goin for my Eagle BOR this Thursday so I was just wondering.

As soon as the application is approved by National the scout can start wearing the Eagle Badge.
If it is not written down then it is not an official rule

Are there any sources that you could link me to that "officially" say you may wear the badge once the application is approved by National?

All Scouts are entitled to wear the badge of rank (or palm) in question immediately upon successful completion of a BOR for rank (or palm) advancement... Eagles are no Exception to this rule. The Eagle Scout BOR process is "technically" not complete until the application is received and approved by the National office; but, the date of the Eagle award shown on all of his Eagle records will actually be the same as the date of the local Board of Review.

Actually - No, you are NOT entitled to wear the Eagle Rank immediately upon successful completion of the Eagle BOR.

That might be the "offcial" date on the record, but until your local council receives the approved Eagle Scout certificate & credentials from National, the council is not allowed to sell the rank award & the unit is not allowed to schedule a COH.

From the bottom of the Eagle Scout Rank Application -

http://www.nesa.org/trail/58-728.pdf

Presentation of the rank may not be made until the Eagle Scout credentials are received by the BSA local council.

From the Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project Workbook - Page 16 - The 12th of the 12 Steps from Life to Eagle -

http://www.nesa.org/trail/18-927.pdf

The Eagle Scout Service screens the application to ascertain information such as proper signature, positions of responsibility, tenure between ranks, and age of the candidate. Any item not meeting national standards will cause the application to be returned for more information. If the application is in order, the Scout is then certified as an Eagle Scout by the Eagle Scout Service on behalf of the National Council. Notice of approval is given by sending the Eagle Scout certificate to the local council. The date used on the certificate will be the date of the board of review. The Eagle Award must not be sold or given to any unit until after the certificate is received by the council service center. The Eagle Scout court of honor should not be scheduled until the local council receives the Eagle Scout rank credentials.

Hey, Nuts4Scouts!

I was looking for that... but, I'm sure glad you found it and posted it in here because you added the steak, whereas all I could come up with was the salad.

BTW, what I actually said was that, in the case of an Eagle board, the BOR is "technically" NOT complete until National approves the application.

Just curious, how long should national take with my application? My EBOR was 11/20/07, and I plan on having my ECOR after the troop COR in January.

It should take 30 - 60 days to come back from Texas. Once the certificate arrives you or the troop advancement person can buy the patch.

Now, when can you sew it on? Sometimes troop adults like to hold on to rank patches and wait weeks or months for a court of honor. The Scoutmaster handbook says "A Scout should receive his new badge as soon as possible after his achievement has been certified by a board of review. A simple ceremony at the conclusion of a troop meeting or during a campout is ideal ...".

The court of honor can come later. Why wait?!

We used to tell the boys 4-8 weeks. Now that our council sends the paperwork electronically, we tell them it may be as long as 4 weeks, but it usually comes in 2 weeks.

Our council service center tells us 4-8 weeks for the return of the credentials. In reality, we usually receive them in 2-3 weeks.

Also for our council, after you pick up the credentials, you can cross the ahll to the Scout shop and they provide you with the complete medal presentation set. (Patch, medal, and parents/mentor pins).

Our Troop policy is to provide badges of rank as soon as they are earned with a brief presentation beofre the Troop during our closing ceremonies. The pocket card/certificate is then awarded at a formal Court of Honor.

For Eagle Scouts, I prefer to present the patch as soon as possible after credentials are returned and save the certificates and Eagle pin for presentation at the Eagle COH. In our Troop, the CO ensures each Eagle Scout has a seperate COH.

My son's Eagle was kicked back by National for a date typo.
SPL 15 Aug 2003 - 14 Aug 2003 instead of 2004. Better to wait than explain why your COH is delayed.

Oh well, that's easily enough fixed. Something that in all honesty should have been caught at the local level.
