I've seen some units use those instead of neckerchiefs...in their eyes, so long as they're consistent across the board, it looks good (Call me old-fashioned, but I still think a good neckerchief and slide look better, but it IS the BOY Scouts, not the DAD scouts)

Well since im the only one that wheres our neckerchiefs im just trying to find something they will wear...... I like the neckerchiefs much better.... buts thats just me .

Our troop requires neckerchiefs UNLESS a scout has participated in a NYLT, Brownsea, or other leadership building opportunity, including high adventure-type programs (although none of our scouts have done this yet).

Our scouts can only wear a bolo if they have attended one of the above. Scouts who wear the bolos are looked up to, and some scouts who might not otherwise have experienced Brownsea or NYLT, consider attending JUST to be able to wear one.

About a fourth of our scouts are able to wear bolos.

One thing we need to teach boys about the neckerchief is that it can be used in case of an emergency. When we did out Search and Rescue Camporee in Oct. One thing the boys discovered was that the woven belt and the neckerchief work really well to help make a litter to carry someone and the neckerchief makes a great bandage.
Had one group of boys that used 6 belts and two tree limbs to carry one of the "victims" out of the woods.

The bolo won't do that.

lol, yeah I have seen stuff about that (mainly going threw my dads Scout books from 35+ years ago) and thats one reson why I wear full uniform most of the time on outings........ but im just a fan of neckerchiefs in a neckerchief hating troop .......

Back in the dark ages the short sleeve shirt had no collar it was a very open V neck so you had to wear a neckerchief. ALso When you wore a collared shirt(long Sleeve) you rolled the collar indise the neck.

Our troop issues the neckerchief and slide to the boys when they cross over, and that is a required uniform item for troop meetings. They earn the right to wear a bolo when they've done their first-year HA trip, and it is the only authorized bolo allowed for wear in uniform for the boys in our troop. Uniformity can be a good thing.

The key question is who decided that this would be the rule, the adults or the scouts? I can see if the Charter Organization wanting to require neckerchiefs, then it can be an adult decision. Otherwise, it should IMHO be a PLC decision what the "standard" for the troop uniform should be, as long as it falls within the uniform guidelines of the BSA. (the boys do not have the right/authority to change that)

I am proud to say that our Senior Patrol (now called the PLC) decided a few years ago, and every year the PLC takes another vote. We have fantastic adult leaders that really do their best to have the boys do as much as possible.

We also give each boy a neckershief and slide for crossover. I am also proud to say that most of the boys who have earned bolos still stuff their neckerchief somewhere in hteir gear to be able to do "stuff" in an emergency.

The more I think about it, the more I realize our troop is really well run!

We have been wearing bolos in our troop for over twenty years. The boys do not put up a fuss about them at all.

They are not hard to make and you can make them unique to the troop that way.
