I was a scout when the skill awards were used in the mid 70s. the scout skillswere a bit more relaxed now then they are now in my opinion. but I am glad that they finally went back to the skills. we need to train leaders who have went through scouts as a youth because the methods of teaching have changed drasticlley over the years. I am glad I went through training and I learned a lot to help me in my career as a ASM. also from what I see is that most troops are glad to have someone just step up and be a leader. as long as they become a leader then who cares about training. just my observation.

I'm glad that you said "pretty much"! I was a Scout (Eagle) before the skill awards of the 70's and, while there remain things in the program that are the same ("Boy run" among them), I am comfortable with the program as it exists today and do my best to run it this way. I personnally know several other adult leaders that do the same. And from discussions with others who were Scouts "way back when", there were SMs then who ran things the way the wanted to, as well.

I too am glad that I attended the current training. I learned a lot. I embrace the training and now participate frequently in training others. As with the program, there are things that I would change if I could. Never the less, I consider the Boy Scout training program to be excellent and proudly (and strongly) recommend it.

So my observation would be that there have been, and will continue to be, good and not so good SMs (and other leaders) (and I haven't seen the corrolation to previous Eagle rank, that you have). And, that we all need to work to make sure that we can get as many as possible to be better.
