Dutch Oven Competition

Has anyone run one at a Camporee or Summer Camp? My troop is in charge of running one next weekend (10-15) at the District Camporee, and I could use some ideas on orchestration. My thought were:

1. make it a dessert competition, and have a community cracker barrel following it.

2. The SPLs or acting SPLs from each troop would be the judges.

3. have a designated cooking area, permitting only 1 adult leader and 2 scouts to make the dessert.

But I don't know what criteria to judge on.

Again, any thoughts w/b appreciated.

Some suggestions:

I would have some of the camporee staff not SPL's as judges.

Have the desserts brought to a central location. Then have them numbered (not Troop number) & brought to the judges at a different location. This helps eliminate any favoritism.

Judges on taste & originality.

You could also have points for presentation. For example, salsa presented in a bowl that has a chili pepper design on it. (I know - salsa isn't a dessert) It would help in the case of a tie and show the planning that went into doing the activity.

We had one last fall and it was a ball. I think I have the information left in my file. It gave the rules. One thing it did include was a leave no track catagory. I will look tonight after I get back from Round Table and see if I still have it. If so I will get it to you.

Turned out well, although we only had 6 entries out of 12 troops. The winners were quite creative, making ice cream in the dutch oven. Ingredients in the oven, the oven put in a big cooler filled with ice, etc. Guess we never said it was a dutch oven cooking contest, so there's a loophole you may want to consider in the future!

That was a creative idea! A dutch oven cook off is a great idea. We had one a summer camp with little participation but the food was great. I also would like to have some additional info. I liked the leave no trace.
