Sleeping bags

Postby spiffy » Sat Oct 15, 2005 6:44 pm

What is a good 25-35 degree bag that is small, light, affordable (under $90), durable, and can stand wet, preferably polarguard 3d. I was looking at a Kelty and a Slumberjack, has anyone had exp. with these bags?

Wagion, good site :D

I'm looking at this one: http://www.alpsmountaineering.com/CrescentLake.htm

I need to get a new sleeping bag and I already have one rated for 5 degrees. I think 20 is going to work good around here. And the price is right too. On their Scout website, they have it listed at around $33!

You have to also remember to get the bag suited for your own temperature as well. I had a 20 degree bag that was way too hot for me. Even in 0 degree nights. I had to change to a 40 degree bag that I use in any temerature. My wife now uses the 20 degree bag, and she doesn't go when the temerature gets under 30 degrees, because she gets too cold. The 20 degree bag doesn't keep her warm enough, even at 30 degrees.

So, besides looking at just the temerature of the bag, take into consideration your own sleeping preferences.

Enjoy.

A few good companies for bags without spending an arm and leg try

REI.com they have good bags in the REI line they also stock the major brands. The REI bag is about 2-3lbs and comes with a storage and a stuff sack. IT compresses to about basketball size snd its 90.00. It has a synthetic fill which does not loose insulating abilities when wet and come in 2 lenghts.

Try Campmoor they have discontinued and last year models.

Hope this helps Dewey Lure

What ever you buy, make sure it has a two way zipper so you can open the feet end if it becomes too warm.

Also, the most expensive are not always much better than ones you can find for much less. Try http://www.campmor.com for a wide variety and if you check back often, they have lots of specials. I've had very good luck buying from them through the years.

I forgot to add this in an earlier reply. Go to Coleman Camping Products, they have an online outlet store and they do offer discounts. youth groups can also enroll for free and get a number to use when ordering. They do offer free shipping on orders and or other incentives.

Gander Mountain also gives a 10% discount to scouts as well as Dicks Sporting goods.

ALPS Mountaineering Sleeping Bags

Postby sgtfrey » Tue May 16, 2006 3:39 pm

I bought an ALPS Clearwater +20 Regular for my wife last year and it is great. Packs small 7"x13" and is very light weight about 3lbs carry weight. Both my son and I have "borrowed" her bag for campouts and it has performed every time.

He normally uses a Coleman 0 deg and I use a slumberjack +20 both work just fine but when you are looking on saving weight and staying comfortable the ALPS is perfect. MSRP is about $70 but you can get them at www.scoutdirect.com for $43.99

I know REI has a few low weight bags but therse can be expensive as down costs .,

I know this thread is old, but Campmor has Kelty Light Year Climashield XP 20 for only $70 right now. Great deal for sub 3 pound bag.
