Issues with "Alps Mountaineering" brand Backpacks, et al...

Postby mt_goodrich » Fri Aug 20, 2010 6:38 pm

I purchased a backpack for my trek to Philmont. Unfortunately, the thing failed miserably.

On the first day, a tear appeared along the seam of the main compartment. Our Ranger was first to notice it.

On the second to the last day, the left shoulder strap began to come apart at the point where it is attached to the backpack. I was able to borrow/obtain enough safety pins to keep it together until we finally got back into base camp.

Needless to say, I was not happy....and unfortunately, two other folks with Alps backpacks had problems.

Today, I emailed them, along with photos of my pack. Within 30 minutes I had a response back.

They apologized for the problems that I and the others had. They admitted that they have had a high number of issues with the model backpack I had (Cascade 5200) that they had gotten from their manufacturer.

To make it up to me, I was offered a replacement backpack now.....and then another new/improved backpack when that model becomes available in the next month or so.

I am willing to give them another chance. I do understand that things happen.

I must say that the Alps Mountaineering Chaos 2.0 tent that I used was OUTSTANDING and I fell in love with it. Very easy to set up and take down.

I think every manufacturer at one point creates a model with flaws. Son's $300 two-year-old Gregory backpack broke at the hipbelt and REI replaced it with a brand new one. I checked reviews of this pack, and many people have had the same product failure. We have two older Gregory packs in the family, and the old design of the hipbelt is still working great.

That's wonderful that Alps is standing behind their product and offering replacements & upgrades. Customer service is the one of most important aspects of a company.

The Chaos 2 is a nice looking tent. The pole configuration must give you a lot more useable space. With only an 86" length, having more vertical tent walls is a great feature.

From my experience ALPS is a stand up company. They provide great service ,ordered Tues morning received it Thurs afternoon. Our troop uses all ALPs tents . We have camped in 7 inch rain storms and no water inside at all, wish I could say that about other brands I have purchased.

Alps

We had a tent where one of the scouts broke a tent pole (stood on it when folding up). Called Alps for the information on replacing the pole, costs, etc. They, after listening to what happened told us that they were shipping a new pole to us (no charge). That is a stand-up company.
