Venturing pants--gray switchbacks any time soon?

Postby jhawk » Fri Dec 15, 2006 12:17 pm

Does anyone know if there are gray switchbacks in the works for Venturing crews? My son and I are now in a crew and the cotton pants just don't seem very practical for lots of outdoor activities. Hasn't BSA ever heard the phrase "cotton kills?" ha We like the green switchbacks for the troops. I sure hope some gray ones are on the way for crews.... I realize we can get our own Columbias or something, but it would be nice to have a "uniform" brand for uniforming purposes.

Sounds like a good suggestion.

The more "they" hear from Scouters, the more they might consider it???

I hope not. The zippers hit my right at my knees so I can not kneel. The cloth is too thin and tears easily. Try orienteering cross country (meaning off trails) in them through thick under cover.

I have ruined three pair because the full uniform is part of the program. I liked it better when I was in a unit that let the boys wear tough clothes to the woods (including old BDU pants).

When I go down natural rock slides, I like material that is going to last.

OK...of my soap box now. These new pants just do not work for me.

Zips

They don't fit me right either, as far as those zippers, but I do wear them for some activities. But I will wear my nicer ones for dressy times. Tomorrow I'm speaking at a Memorial Service for an Eagle Scout. The previous pants stay on me better...the new ones want to slide off. But they're kinda comfortable.

Venturing pants

I wear the Columbia Trail Ridge pant... they are grey, nylon twill and if you look on the internet, you can find them new at 1/2 price. They are great for the trail. I generally don't care for the zip offs unless they are a good brand (REI) I find that they fall apart too easily.

And don't sit downwind of any campfire. National has been informed multiple times that the switchbacks are not fire resistant, infact that they are the opposite. I have holes in my switchbacks from every campfire that I attended. Hopefully the material in the new lightweight switchbacks will be more fire resistant.
