Quality Unit for Crews

Postby ThunderingWind » Sun Jan 11, 2009 11:19 am

An interesting pair of questions has come up in our Commissioner's meeting regarding the Quality Unit designation and Crews.

While the tracking document ask about youth earning advancment awards and participating in outdoor activites...the question(s) are:

1) What if the youth opt to NOT earn any and jsut have fun?

2) What if the Crew is not outdoor oriented and are a service Crew?

I was looked at as the answer man as I am the most active Crew leader in the District. I stated my opinion but also stated I do not have any National policy to quote and support me. My opinions were:

1) If the Leadership can show that they explained the program to the youth, shared information about other events that can get "tickets punched" to earn things, etc...then the leadership has done what they need to do. It is after all a youth led group and they have the choice.

2) Each crew needs to be evaluated as an individual group. If they are doing what they are "registered" to do, then they should get credit. So if they serve two meals at the local church soap kitchen, then they are good to go.

I hope the good people of the forum can direct me to published policies that will either supprt me or show me the correct answer. I can find nothing the Venture Leader's Manual and none of the DEs have any thing.

Venture Crews and Sea Scout Ships need to meet the following:

* A Crew/Ship must complete all * items and two others for a total of six.

*1. Training - The Advisor will complete Venture Leader Basic Training.

*2. Two-Deep Leadership - We will have one or more associate Advisors registered, trained and active. Coed Crews will have men and women registered as Advisors and/or associate Advisors. One registered adult will be assigned the responsibility of Youth Protection Training.

*3. Officers - The Crew will elect officers and the Advisor or associate Advisor will conduct a Crew Officers' Seminar.

4. Superactivity - The Crew/Ship will conduct an annual Superactivity, which is a major trip, activity or project requiring advanced planning and promotion.

5. Program - The Crew will conduct a minimum of two meetings or activities each month.

6. Service Project - The Crew/Ship will conduct an annual service project preferable for their Chartered Partner or their community.

7. Open House - The Crew will conduct an annual open house or other effort to recruit new members.

8. Membership - We will renew our charter with an equal or greater number of youth registered over a year ago.

9. Crew Committee - An active Crew committee or at least three members must meet a minimum of four times a year.

*10. On-Time Charter Renewal - The Crew will complete its charter renewal before its current charter expires.
