Is Exploring making a comeback?

Postby biglou » Fri Oct 16, 2009 4:48 pm

I was looking at the BSA Scoutstuff website and found Exploring Insignia on there. I am wondering what is going on. I am going to post the link to the scoutstuff website and you all can scroll down and take a look see from the isignia page.

Exploring never went away.

The Exploring program is a part of Learning For Life, which is a subsidiary of BSA National.

They share the same offices, councils, and National supply center.

Maybe I should clarify what I meant. In 1998, the former Exploring program changed to the current Venturing program and Exploring was relegated to the Learning For Life Division of the BSA. I was wondering if Exploring was going to once again become a traditional part of the BSA or what my fear is going to be rehashed into the current Venturing program. Just curious. I am a fan of the current Venturing program but it needs to be supported and not treated like the "red-headed step-child" like some councils I have been involved with have been treating Venturing.

I doubt it.

Exploring was separated mainly because of the legal challenges facing BSA. Police and Fire have long been two of the strongest work based Explorer Posts, but both are closely connected to local governments. With the lawsuits and the publicity, many towns across the country were shutting down their Police and Fire Posts. So, to keep the work based Explorer Posts from having legal problems, Exploring was transferred to Learning For Life.

BSA then expanded the outdoor area of Exploring into the Venturing program.

BSA has faced much the same problem the last few years with public schools. That is why BSA National recommended that all units chartered by a school change their CO.
