She is a girl!! -So is her Mom.

Postby Eamonn » Mon Nov 07, 2005 1:41 am

As yet we don't have any young Sea Scouts, our youngest is 15 going on 16. So far having an older group is making life easy for me and I'm really enjoying it.
We were going Caving today. Yesterday our youngest Sea Scout phoned and said he needed 3 more applications. I don't know why he just didn't print the apps that are on line, but I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. I said I would give them to him today.
He called back later to ask if his girl friend could go caving with us? I said not just yet. I could tell he was disappointed and I hate to disappoint a good kid. :(
I asked him to give me the phone number of the girl.
Later this month I hit the big 50. I joined Scouts back home as a Wolf Cub and have been in ever since. 43 years without ever having a girl in Scouting. I have OJ, who is an only child and have two sisters. So I'm not that experienced when it comes to girls
Anyway, I called the girls Mom. Introduced myself and said that if she was willing to let her daughter go I would take her, but the Ship at this time wasn't set up for girls because of the lack of a female leader.
She said that she had already checked me out !! With the boyfriend and his Mom, who was a Den Leader when I was CM and I had taken both her boy's to the Jambo. I said that I was pleased that she knew that I wasn't the local pervert, but until we found a female leader we just couldn't take any girls. She said that they had just moved from California (The State of.) and that she had been involved with Girl Scouts, we talked for a while she knew nothing about Sea Scouts, so I took her e-mail and mailed her the Sea Scout site.
I took the girl caving, she did great. I dropped her home last (OJ was with me.) I stopped in to meet her Mom. She said that from what she had seen on the web site Sea Scouting looked great and went on to say how much she enjoyed sailing.
I left leaving her with an adult application and two Venturing apps. Her son turns 14 in January. :D
I'm sure that I'll be OK with girls - It just is going to be new to me and might take some getting used too.
Right now every bone in my body aches !! I think Wagionvigil set me up, so that we went to all the really tough parts of the caves!!
I'm painfully aware that I'm turning 50 and not 30

Hi Wagionvigil,
I hope that the Regional teleconference isn't just another "Numbers Meeting" Lord knows I put enough miles on my poor little cars attending them.
I know that you have the same October membership numbers that I have. But I hope you have had the time to study yours? I Will get around to it -Before the next meeting, by which time they will be out of date.
I'm not a numbers type, I think we confuse ourselves with all the darn numbers. We use an end of year number. This is used to determine Quality. Normally the result of everyone running around like a chicken with its head cut off, recruiting like crazy. We use a set of todays numbers in comparison to where we were this time last year. These are fairly useful numbers. I like the numbers that come out just after rechartering. If I were to want real hard numbers of how we are doing these are the numbers that I would want.
I really think that the time has come for Venturing to take a long hard look at what works and what doesn't.
I think we have spent far too long telling people what they want to hear.
If there really is a problem? And I think that there is!! But I wouldn't swear to it. We are never going to fix it until we identify it.
You and I both are "Tents & Rope" types guys. Sure I have spent the last decade hiding on the District and Council level, but at the end of the day even though we may disagree on some stuff, I would like to think that when we look at the Vision Statement the words that stand out are "Fun and Adventure"
If any good were to come out of the Regional teleconference tomorrow, my hope would be that everyone take a long hard look at the Vision Statement and make a commitment to do everything that can be done to support and promote fun and adventure in Venturing in the Councils that the Region serves.

Did you guys get off topic? :)

Hey! I hope the girl thing works out for you in Sea Scouts. Stockton has a few Boats and they are not co-ed. I don't know exactly why. But from what I understand the girls show the boys up alot. I think that opening your Crew up to girls will be a plus over all.

good luck

Wagionvigil and myself do talk and e-mail each other. But at times I think that some of the stuff that comes up here is worth opening up to everyone.
He is the father of a very nice young Lady!
It's just a shame that we didn't have a Sea Scout Ship in our Council when she was a young Lass.
By the way I'm still sore, but so is OJ!!
We went to buy dog food and it was like two old men!!
