Wanting more info about Venturing..............

Postby yardhunter » Tue Aug 15, 2006 10:47 pm

............yes, my friends, I'd like more info about the Venturing groups. I'm one of those ol' scouters, earning the Eagle Award in 1977, then getting back into scouting in 1999 when my son turned 6. My son is now a 1st Class Scout & loves getting out with the troop. Speaking about getting out, I enjoy camping with the kids & feel it's a calling for me.

If you're curious, here's a link to an recent outing:

I have a daughter that's 10 now & really misses the camping when my son was a cub scout. ( As CM, we took her with us to every campout. ) She loves things like caving, canoes, whitewater, camping & anything else scouting related. Girl Scouts for her was a joke. The GS around here are the shopping mall types. Regarding the girls joining the crews, bring 'em on because my wife can't wait to go with us. She loves the camping part & is ready to go!

Anyway...........I've read some things about Venturing but the internet info is too confusing. I want to get a crew started just before my 10 year old turns 14.

Our council office is 3 hours drive from here.... so... other than sending me the BSA info, they aren't much help to me.

So....can anyone here post a link about Venturing that makes some sense?? Regarding outings, I have plenty of ideas of things to do, I'm looking for meeting ideas, etc. to keep the scouts interested in between outings. I have plenty of time to get one started but I don't want to wait too long to research it out.

Thanks in advance....................see ya yardhunter

I would recommend the Venturing Fast Start -

http://olc.scouting.org/info/vfs.html

Then the Venturing info at BSA National is good, there is just a LOT of info to go thru -

Just keep in mind, before you start planning out all of the Crew's meetings & activities, that a Venturing Crew, even more so than a Boy Scout Troop, is youth run. The adults should be truly simply advisers.

Good Luck !! :D

Start working on starting a crew now. Our crew took three years and couple of false start to really get going. You might get a mixed reaction in your troop. The crew tends to pull the older boys. Done right it can be a good thing. It can keep the older scouts in scouting.

...............thanks for the tips. I understand boy run , that's the way it should be. We practice that now in the troop my son is involved in.

I may try starting a crew soon, however, that's tough when I have very limited time...and....my own kids aren't old enough yet.

It's something I may look into, also, thanks for the links everyone............see ya yardhunter

Crews

There are some very useful Venturing tools, online. While you're planning, you might find a local sponsor that desires the same things you do for this age group, and will also be a source of leaders for you. Then you aren't held back by having the limited time of one individual. And be open to all the possibilities for a theme(s) for your Crew. This may help find the others you need.

Thanks for the advice. I'm open for anything that keeps teens active. I love the BSA program, having gone thru it back in the 70's & earning the Eagle Award. I'm now back into it again & this time, I'm willing to start a Venturing group so my ( now 10 yr. old ) daughter can enjoy some of the things she attend while we were in the cubs. You see, she attended every function because we made it a family affair since I was the CM.

Yes, they will decide what they want to do & as long as it credible, I'm for it.
Thanks............see ya yardhunter
