Archery & BB Shooting Belt Loop Recording

Postby agdparker » Thu Jul 28, 2011 5:25 pm

I came across something interesting this week that I thought I would share. At Day Camp this year, the boys completed the Archery and BB Shooting belt loops. I was trying to record the loops in the online advancement system and they were completely missing from the list of belt loops.

I called council and they had not heard of that problem before and said they would record it in their system. She said it was possibly because these two belt loops must occur at council-sponsored events, but when she went into ScoutNET, she couldn't enter them either.

Has anyone else run across this little oddity?

I would hazard a guess and say this (probably) has something to do with the very recent publishing of the new:

Since your council has already tried to enter the data as well, I'd suggest you report this, in detail, to Curt Palmer at National.

This kind of stuff happens all the time... whenever somebody in IT has to perform brain surgery on ScoutNET.

From Curt:
Thanks for the heads up. It has nothing to do with the release of the new shooting sports manual. I don’t know why but will see what I can find out.

I don't think our registrar enters belt loops into IA since they are not an advancement requirement. Any one else do it that way?

You're right that they're not critical, but the option was there to enter them, so I figured I'd put them in. I don't consider it a big issue at all, more of a curiosity.

Got a response from National a bit ago:

Good afternoon. Your email was forwarded to me regarding the Archery & BB Shooting Belt Loops, at this time there are not codes for these beltloops . Please do notify your council so they can note these beltloops on the person profile, under comments. AT this time we do not have an ETA on getting codes for these beltloops. I am sorry for the confusion on this matter. Please let us if you have any questions, 972-580-2267 or myscouting@scouting.org.

Curt responded again:

This is the answer I received. I am inquiring more about it. But for now, this is it.

The Belt Loops are in Internet Advancement, for example, except for shooting sports related, as you indicated. The reason is because of rules for earning and being approved.

Got a resolution today from Curt:

As of this morning is:

Archery and BB Shooting have been added to Internet Advancement. Packs can now enter the awards when using Internet Advancement.

Many thanks to the National Council Application Services for their rapid response and solution!!!!

Pretty rapid response, IMO!

Hey maybe since you have their attention, you could get them to change the name to the
"Cub Scout Academic and Sports Program",
and when you click under that it would have a place to enter the date for both the belt loops AND the pins.

because it makes no sense to record in internet advancement just the belt loops and not the pins.

Well, I think they treat bugs with a higher priority than inconveniences, at least most software shops are like that.

Yeah it's not a bug it's a programming error to name the awards belt loops but not include a place for pins, since both are earned under the same Academics and Sports Program.
