Publishing the MB Counselor List

Postby FieldSports » Sat Mar 15, 2008 1:32 am

I have read the District Advancement Committee Book on merit badge counselors. Checked the archive and don't see the answer to this.

My question for those out there - Do you publish or make the unit, district, or council list available? and if so, to whom (only SM's, Leaders, anyone?) and in what format? (printed, email, web site?)

Thanks.

I keep the paper copy and the boys ask me for names. I generally give them the closest 2-3 people to call. Or I give them the names of people we know do a good job.

Our council has the list on-line, but it is far from complete. If you sort by district (there are 9), only about half have there list available.

I find this rather irritating because we are the last community out on the edge of council. South and east of us are different councils. North is a district that does not have its list on-line. And our district then has many names that are not at all close because of the goofy way they re-aligned the districts a couple years ago.

The other thing with the on-line list is that it is not readily available at scout meetings, which is when the boys ask. And an up-to-date counselors list cannot be easily printed from it.

I was told that our council couldn't publish their MBC list on the web for privacy reasons. BSA rule? I said password protect it like recharter and/or internet advancement but no luck so far.

I have our district's on an excel spreadsheet and have provided it to all my guys. I also have the 2 distircts' on either side of us hard copies. I run a Council MB College so I get support from those advancement chairs. As far as any of them being current....well that's another story.

For a while, our council would publish a MBC book each spring. Then, it went to a CD format only. Last year it was put on the website, but is password protected. The nice thing about it being on the web, is that they can add new counselors immediately, instead of waiting until they publish the next CD.

The last District list of MB Counselors was in a database format. It is now about 5 years old and out of date. The District Advancement team is attempting to establish a new list which they say will be web based (password protected).

We keep a list of approved merit badge counselors in Troopmaster at the Troop level. If a parent is interested in becoming a MB Counselor, we process their application and make a record of it in Troopmaster.
