Favorite Eagle BOR questions

Hi-

I'm a fairly new District Advancement Chair, and have been running the Eagle Scout advancement pipeline ( project approvals, Boards of Review) for several months. I'm soliciting input for good questions to ask as I get tired of asking about merit badges and so forth after I get through the project discussion.

Some of my current favorites:

What did you expect to be asked about/talk about that we didn't touch on?
What questions do you have for us?
What would you do if we didn't approve you for Eagle Scout?
What does Leadership mean?
What would you, having just been through Scouting, do to change the Scouting program?

I have not been involved with a BOR, but the best question I've heard is "If you had to choose one point of the scout law to eliminate, which one would it be and why?"

Favorite thing you ever did in Scouting?
If you could change 1 thing in scouting what would it be and why?

I like to ask some of the following:
1. Who was the most influential person who helped you get to this point in your Scouting
career tonight? Explain why.
2. What do the last five words of the Scout Oath ( . . . mentally awake and morally
straight.) mean to you?
3. What was the most outstanding trip/event you ever did in Scouting?
4. Which leadership position have you held that was the most difficult? Why and what
did you learn from it?
5. Do you think the Eagle Rank process is fair or too difficult? Why?

If I were to call your school principal tomorrow morning and have it announced over the PA in the morning announcements that you had earned your Eagle, how would you handle it?

Since Eagle Candidates are supposed to be giving back to Scouting.....I ask:

1) How would the Tiger Den at your feeder pack describe you?

2) What is your plan to give to Scouting if you are awarded your Eagle?

Outstanding-- I appreciate the input and will definitely use some of these. I'm compiling a list of good questions to ask, and will bring it back to this discussion board in the next week or so. These will help the Board volunteers (of whom I have many! This seems to be the fun part of administration... ) to jump right into the process.

So, here's a list that I have handed out to my BoR volunteers to help them get started and in the flow of the board. I am going to add some of the questions from earlier in the thread to this list...

Board Questions:
Regarding the Project:
- What is Leadership?
- How did you demonstrate leadership during your Eagle Project?
- What changes did you have to make to your plan, and why?
- What was the most difficult part of the project?
- How did you pick the project, or what made you choose it?
- Have you received feedback on your project?
- What did you learn from doing the project?
- What would you do differently?

I especially like to focus on interpersonal issues that may have come up during the project, and then have the Scout discuss the leadership lessons or philosophy that guided him through the difficulty.

Scouting Questions:
- What, big-picture-wise, are you taking away from Scouting?
- Do you plan to give back? How?
- Why do you want to earn the rank of Eagle?
- How would you change the Scouting program?
- What was your focus as (PL, SPL, etc)? How did you work to accomplish it?
- How would you change the requirements for Eagle?
- What would you change in your troop?
- What experience do you value the most? Why?
- Merit badges—favorite, why?


School/Hobbies
- What are your plans for school or career?
- How have you been able to apply your Scouting experiences outside of Scouts?
- Where do you see yourself in 5/10 years?
- What special interests do you have?

Other:
- What did you expect us to ask or talk about that we didn’t?
- What would you do if we didn’t approve you for this award?
- What questions do you have for us?
