Here's what I use:
  • OpenOffice.Org -- A free and open-source Productivity Suite (Word Processor, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Etc.) -- Free
  • Winamp -- The ultimate multi-media player! Streaming or organizing your library of Audio and Video -- Free (The Pro version is about $20.00.)
  • Portable Apps -- A collection of free and open-source portable applications for your thumb drive -- Free
Although the above list appears to be a short one, bear in mind that OpenOffice and Portable Apps are collections of several programs wrapped into one bundle. There is actually bonus to bundled open source or freeware, in that, it makes mangagement, such as updates, much easier.

Also, if you don't use a paid version, here's some stuff you absolutely, positively must, must, must have:
  • An anti-virus program
  • A firewall program
I'll come back and update this post as I'm able.

Googles Picasa: http://picasa.google.com/ is a very nice photo suite and its free.

Faststone Photo Resizer: http://www.faststone.org/ free also
Photo Resizer is very helpfull when uploading photos to a web site.
You can Batch modify / shrink a bunch of photos for making uploads eaiser, add water marks, text, resize etc. Pretty simple to use.

A good source for freeware is http://www.downloads.com.
I have picked up some nice tools here.

Mixed bag of Linux and Windows apps.

Desktop OS: openSUSE. I use it to create custom OS for the computer lab I built for the troop.

Desktop/Office apps:
openoffice.org - office suite. (Link is to the Go-oo version that supports macros and office 2007 formats)
Scribus - desktop publishing
GIMP, Irfanview - photo & image editing/viewing/slideshow
Firefox - web browser
Thunderbird or Evolution(Linux, Windows) - Email clients

Education/Training:
openSUSE education pack. Available as an add-on to openSUSE via DVD or download. Has apps for astronomy, computer, engineering, and other merit badges.

Website:
Joomla!. Allows Scouts to focus on content and not administrating a server. Use with XAMPP server.

Multimedia:
VLC media player
K3B, IMGBurn - CD/DVD burner
Kino, Kdenlive -video editors

Server:
OS - openSUSE
Email - Scalix or Zimbra
Web - Apache, XAMPP - loads everything needed to run a website on Linux or Windows.
Database - MySql

virus cleanup - superantispyware followed by malwarebytes
There are also a host of anti-rootkit programs for the serious bugs
Clonezilla - great imaging software

home computers - all running Ubuntu linux, all software is free like it should be.

Photo viewer: http://faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm
Zip tool: http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
Online file storage: Dropbox and Box.net
Photo sharing for the troop: Shutterfly share sites. This is really amazing and could serve your troop as a complete web solution.

Lubuntu 13.10 (recently installed) - I previously used the mainline Ubuntu until when I upgraded it would show the start screen. The I used PCLinuxOS, but got bored with that.
Firefox - Main Web Browser
Kompozer - Web Editor
VLC player - Plays movies
