Hiking/Backpacking IPhone App? (or Android?)

Anyone use an inexpensive IPhone app that helps plot and track your treks? Anything like: Start here, and trace my course as I walk it kinda thing? One that I wouldn't have to update every 5 minutes.... and I could upload locations to Facebook as I go...

Any bells and whistles would be a plus... like: it took 6 hrs to do this trail... or your elevation changed at this point to this point, or a foot massage app... lol

I use My Tracks on my droid it is free. I also think you can get it for iphone

How well does it work when you're really off the beaten path? Got a shakedown hike in Dolly Sods planned for Mem Day W/E and reception up there really stinks.

I always wondered how well these phones "sink".

Worked really well from what I could tell, it also gives elevation change, pace, distance traveled.

Only thing is we did a marked 5 mile trail twice (10 total miles) and the app said we did 12 miles exactly... so I wonder which one is right. I will do more treks in the future and take my pedometer I wear on my waist to see.

So the Droid phones have a cell signal processor AND a GPS satellite signal processor? Or are they using the new FAA cell-phone signal GPS test signal like the signal that is being worked on in planes in Alaska?

I believe most Androids (including the specific Droids) have a dedicated GPS, vs. the iPhone's aGPS (cell signal processor). So, yes, they are more accurate, like a normal hiking GPS.

Is the GPS signal to the Metro DC area still "scrambled" to some degree?

I have tried geocaching and was told with the eTrek 10 we should get within 50'. On the open field test course, once I was near the stake, the eTrek told me I was still off the mark so I moved in the direction indicated only to be told to go back to where I was only to be told to move again in another direction.

Happened to all of us using 12 diferent eTrek10s. The $500 GPS unit was only able to get within 10 feet. Not close enough to find the micro cache that looks like a knot in a log bench.

AllTrails worked well, was able to share the trek with Facebook also! I still wonder about the accuracy of both Apps though.

Backcountry Navigator is the best I've seen. Great topos. Easy to cache a selected area. I use it on a Razr Maxx.
