But think of this, most people would buy it, print themselves a copy and then get it copied at like office depot for everyone in their troop and it would cost BSA a lot of money with scouts and scouters doing this.
cballman wrote:ok people lets look at this in a cost per format. how much does a merit badge book cost? then lets look at how much it cost to print a book on line. first you have to have access to a computer and the internet. if not the public library. which charges 10 cents per page one sided. now if you print of a merit badge book say like Genealogy merit badge. wow you have 72 pages in this one. now if the printer would print 2 pages per page you divide by 2 which gives you 36. mulitpy that number by .10 which eqauls 3.60. now then ask your self if those paper printed books has a cover no so to print a cover with thick enough paper to last it will run about 4.00 a book. cost efficent? I dont think so. now look at ebay and see how old some of the merit badge books are being sold online. I have found some in great shape between 30-50 years old. now will the copies you want last that long? again I dont think so. so IMHO the merit badge books are a great bargin so lets not be to hasty as to put them online and have BSA stop printing them. when you factor in the cost of all the time and research that has went into the design and printing of the books they are a bargin at whatever they sell at.
I'm not sure cost is really this issue we are discussing.
I will concede that the MB books as they are sold at the scout shops are better quality than most people could print themselves. It is likely cheaper to buy the books than to print your own if you want the book that will last for years.
The real advantage to having the books available online, (aside from the advantage for the disabled which was mentioned earlier), is that you have instant access to the current information. You can read it on your computer screen. You can print just key pages, or none at all. This would be a way to get current information, even if the scout shop is out-of-stock, or still selling the old books. You can even buy the eBook while the scout shops are closed.
now then ask your self if those paper printed books has a cover no so to print a cover with thick enough paper to last it will run about 4.00 a book. cost efficent?
