im skeptical since i listened to my dad and he said 20 years we were "heading" toward and ice age. now we are "heading" to a global warming? also, i think peer pressure exists for scientist. Maybe some are saying they belive this just to be "in" or to get the nobel prize?

Oh yes, definitely lots of peer pressure!

Either way though... There have been ice ages, right? That's climate change.

I agree that the boys should research both sides of the issue. This teaches them not to blindly follow one side of an issue, but to dig for the facts and make an informed decision.

I also believe that there should be a section on how politics, and the economy affects environmental policy.

This is a science badge. We should keep the politics out of science!

Lots of luck on that one. I believe that it should be mentioned only that political agendas play a big part in how scientific data is presented.

As a scientist by profession, I do my darnedest to be objective in the presentation of results and to resist putting a political spin on the interpretation.

We should keep the politics out of how science is taught and leave the politics for later, after the proper foundation for interpreting results has been laid.

On most issues I would definitely agree. I too am a scientist by profession. An Environmental Scientist to be exact. The whole issue of global warming is clouded by politics. There is a lot of misinformation that is being portrayed as fact particularly in the major causes. It's getting so, that in science and history, that much of the truth is being substituted with misinformation to get young minds to lean toward a particular point of view rather than the facts. Some of this has even crept into scouting lessons. The boys need to know ways to discern the truth. By planting a small seed of healthy skepticism into their minds early on, we help them to want to root out the facts to arrive at an informed opinion.

There doesn't need to be a big discussion on politics and the environment, but only a brief mention. Their minds take so much of what they read and hear as the absolute truth. This is the first step to wisdom which must coincide with knowledge. Better to teach them the right way now then to have to undo the damage later.
