April is Donor Awareness month. I bring this up because I'm certain (even with all the PR) not many people are aware of it. My daughter at the age of 21 went into ALF (Acute Liver Failure) and was given 48 hours to live if she did not get a transplant. She had no prior medical condition and was in perfect health. The point is it could happen to anyone. Five years later (now) she is leading a normal life and ready to earn her Master's degree in social work. She felt she needed to give back and switched careers to help others.
So why do I bring this up? Too many people on the transplant waiting list die because there are not enough donors out there. BSA does have a Donor Awareness Patch (which I am thankful for) but I believe strongly (and many scouters support this) that a merit badge will accomplish many things. Most importantly it will HELP SAVE LIFES. It will EDUCATE scouts in the subject of donors and transplantation in general. It will help clear up all the myths surrounding this subject. It will BRING awareness to different communities all over the country.
I am a district advancement chair and will be working with my local scout executive to fill out the required applications and forms but wanted to get input from others on this. As for requirements I already have a long list that needs to be reviewed but any suggestions would be appreciated. Your thoughts please.
