Skateboarding Option to Skating MB

Postby alex gregory » Tue Sep 23, 2008 5:09 pm

Why can't the guys get a merit badge for skateboarding? It seems so easy to add a skateboarding option to the existing Skating MB.

I have guys ask me all the time about skateboarding. It just seems silly that it has not happened yet.

Without pretending to know one end of a skateboard from the other, I suspect something like this would work:

Skateboarding
Do the following:
1. Describe general skateboarding safety rules and etiquette.
2. Describe the parts and functions of a skateboard.
3. Describe the required and recommended safety equipment.
4. Describe four essential steps to good skateboard care.
5. Do the following:
a. Skate forward with smooth strokes for at least 100 feet.
b. Skate forward and glide at least 15 feet.
c. Stop on command on flat pavement.
6. Do the following:
Perform some skateboarding tricks (I don't know, ask a skateboarder for some material).
7. Do the following:
a. Perform a series of at least four downhill slaloms on pavement with a gentle slope.
b. Describe how to pass a pedestrian or another skater from behind.
c. Describe at least three ways to avoid an unforeseen obstacle while skating.
d. Describe two ways to get on, and off a curb, and demonstrate at least one of these methods.

Why can't guys get Aviation MB by hang gliding? Or Water Sports by Surfing? I don't know. There is a process for such requests on the site and/or you can contact Bill Evans National Advancment Guru and ask. They might have a request on file and maybe can give you the whys.

Not Sure if Bill is now. There has been a total reorganization at National but it would not hurt to find out

Unless it changed really recently, Bill Evans replaced Bill Steele. Steele is now the Director of Alumni Services to include NESA
