Another seasonal Merit Badge Opportunity

Postby ronin718 » Fri Jan 28, 2011 2:57 pm

This one compliments of a high-ranking volunteer in NCAC (must maintain some anonymity  )...

With snow in 49 of the 50 states, the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America has announced that a new merit badge has been authorized. This badge will be available for the first quarter of 2011. It will be reviewed and may become a permanent badge.
If you have any questions please contact your unit advancement chairman.

Snow Shoveling Merit Badge Requirements

1. Discuss snow shoveling safety, and show that you know first aid for injuries or illnesses that could occur while shoveling snow, including heart attacks, stroke, lower back disorders, hypothermia, frostbite, shock, dehydration, sunburn, fractures, bruises, sprains, and strains. Tell how to resuscitate your father.
2. Do EACH of the following:
a. Describe several types of snow shovels, including traditional, lifting, pushing, and ergonomic. Tell when it is appropriate to use each.
b. Describe the proper way to throw snowballs at the city plow that just re-buried your driveway, including safe throwing distances, proper concealment, and escape routes.
c. Explain why weather forecasters rarely know what they’re talking about.
3. Do EACH of the following:
a. Shovel a driveway of your counselor’s choosing, including all stairs, sidewalks, and porches.
b. Apply a proper amount of salt to any icy patches that might remain.
4. Find out about three career opportunities in the field of snow removal. Pick one and find out the lack of education, training, and experience required for this profession. Discuss this with your counselor, and explain why this profession might be suited for you.

It was 72 degrees here today.

I retired my snow shovel at the age of 16 when we moved from Highwood, Illinois to Texas.

Well, if anyone wants to get a jump start on this badge, feel free to head up to our place tomorrow. If all goes as predicted, we should have about 4 inches by morning with the nasty stuff hitting Tuesday afternoon/evening. Blizzard warnings are set with the expectation of 18+ inches of snow. Any takers? I'll even provide hot chocolate!

No thanks. It was in the low 70s yesterday. My plan for snow removal is let the sun do it. It follows LNT principles. I have my scouts discuss solar shovels , why some one would be nuts to use any other & sign off on the badge.

Solar removal is thermal related. Since Scouts already deliver enough hot air, this is not a valid requirement for the Snow Shoveling MB. Note the key word "Shoveling". :D

After they get done talking to me, there is always a lot of stuff to shovel out of the way. Does that count?

add in the courtesy of snow removal: where to place large quantities with out causing other issues.

My neighbors donated their snow to the front of my garage door. 4 ft high -6 wide and the 20 ft long . still working at it

As requested...

7. Discuss with the counselor proper means of placement for snow removal, to include curbs, parking strips, lawns, flower beds, driveways of leaders from competing troops, nitpicky MB counselors, teachers who gave you poor grades, etc. In your discussion, provide details that include depth, width, packing methods, and coordination with snowplow drivers for maximum effectiveness.

My guess would be Florida, but this thread started before the latest monster storm system nailed most of the country. The obvious answer would be Hawaii, but folks forget how tall Mauna Loa is, and they have snow up top.

Yeah, great place to visit. My wife, son, and I stayed at KMC for a week on our way back from Korea back in '03. Absolutely loved the place, wish I could've been one of those lucky stiffs who get an assignment there. Oh well.....
