I like to see a "Model Rocketry" Merit Badge. How 'bout you?

I don't think the rocketry "hobby" should be a significant
part of Space Exploration. (One has little to do with the
other.)

Rocketry is a distinct hobby and deserves to be a seperate
badge.

I agree, but, I think it comes down to a saftey issue.

When you start getting into rockets that are more advanced
then the premade, Estes engines and rockets, the kind that use
liquid fuel or other highly flamable or toxic fuels, I dont
think you want to turn the 12 year old scouts loose with stuff
like that.

I know that at the 97 Jamboree and again at the 2001 Jamboree
alot of rockets were launched around Merit Badge Midway. I am
not sure what MB they were doing it for.

I agree about the safety issue... I think following industry
guidelines or something like... Class 'A' and 'B' engines for
Scouts 13 and under, Class 'C' and 'D' engines for Scouts over
13. NOTHING OVER CLASS 'D' IN SCOUTING.

There's still plenty in the hobby to make a MB worthwhile... A
little (I mean a little) physics, a little on trajectory
formulas, safety, safety and more safety.

Whatcha think?

Other than the fact that it's fun... it's also a requirement
in the 'Space Exlporation' MB, which is my main point.

IMHO, this belongs in a separate MB...

3. Build, launch, and recover a model rocket. If local laws
prohibit the launching of model rockets, do the following
activity: Make a model of a NASA rocket. Explain the functions
of the parts. Give the history of the rocket.

Make a second launch to accomplish a specific objective.
(Rocket must be built to meet the safety code of the National
Association of Rocketry.) Identify and explain the following
rocket parts:

a. Body tube
b. Engine mount
c. Fins
d. Igniter
e. Launch lug
f. Nose cone
g. Payload
h. Recovery system
i. Rocket engine

Sounds like a great idea. It will take some doing to get the
powers that be add it. WE do rockets at our science camp each
year and the scouts love it. Any Merit Badge that can be added
that will make scouting more interesting for the Boys is a MB
worth adding. MB's like Rabbit Raising and Signaling are now
gone and we have new more now merit badges to take their
place. Scouting is for the boys and fun Merit Badges will help
keep them active.
