I believe that this would be a great idea for a new merit
badge, in fact a few years ago I wrote to BSA national to get
a few new merit badges approved. They approved Biology and
Physics and some of the requirements in this Bilogy merit
badge delt with Marine Biology. Also there is a merit badge
called Oceanagraphy which deals derectly with marine life.
Anyhow the Biology Merit badge should come out towards the
last month of 2005.

the only problem is I cant come up with any really good
requirments, though I know they are going to have to do one of
those go through the list things
I was thinking o get the feel of the ecosystem on the sea the
would have to set up a theoretical saltwater aquarium.(please
note this does not include how to set up or mantain a
saltwater tank and is not necesary to know how to run one just
set up the inhabitants, live rock, live sand, snails,
starfish, clams, fish, crabs, urchins etc.....) I know
something about saltwater aquariums so this may just be a
bias. commments on this especially.
Also i was thinking they would have to do a report on one
family of fish like tangs, gobies, anthias, lionfish, damsels,
clowns, triggers, parrots, puffers. and a report on an
invertebrate (anything besides micro organisms) have more post
it later

szelenskei, how did you go about getting your merit badges
approved? It would help everyone on the boards if they knew
how you went about it, what their responses were, etc.
Congratulations on being accepted!

I've got a page that explains the process for new merit
badges, on the USSSP site at:

I have changed my mind I would like a marine biology merit
badge but oceanography is too close I am now proposing they
update the requirements for oceanography to more in depth. I
read the pamphlet and I think it is kind of shallow
