Surfing Merit Badge

Postby Rick Tyler » Thu Jun 23, 2005 5:58 pm

It must be summertime. I hear Huntington Beach (my home town) calling.

Requirement 1. Demonstrate first aid for shark bite, jellyfish sting, skeg slash, surfboard headcrunch, and sun burn.

Requirement 2. Demonstrate natural and goofy footed postures. Demonstrate dropping-in, paddling out, and riding a wave to the beach.

Requirement 3. Define the terms blown-out, shred, gun, fakie, drop-in, cutback, flat, and stoked.

Requirement 4. Recite from memory all the beaches mentioned in "Surfin' USA."

Requirement 5. Visit a professional surboard maker or carve your own board and glass it.

Requirement 6. Describe the following locations: J Bay, Trestles, Narrabeen, Old Man's, Sunset, the Pipeline, and Mavericks. Include the type of break, the typical set of the surf and the best time of year to surf there.

Requirement 7. Explain why only locals are allowed to surf on your beach.

Requirement 8. Discuss Bruce Brown and "Endless Summer" with your counselor. Don't be afraid to cry.

Any one know the quickest and best treatment for jellyfish stings?????

Learned it years ago on the beach at South Padre Island.

Hi!

I'm submitting a more formal proposal for a surfing merit badge. However, before I do that, I wanted to check and see if anyone else has already done so or if you have any pointers to suggested requirements.

Thanks,

Bobby
