Visit and discuss with a selected individual approved by your leader (elected official, judge, attorney, civil servant, principal, teacher) your constitutional rights and obligations as a U.S. citizen. What have some of you guys done to complete this one?

We had a past mayor visit with the troop and lead a 30 minute discussion. I am hoping to do this again this year with the current mayor.

A few kids in the troop have parents who are lawyers. Teachers will help if the scout appproaches them .

We have used local lawyers, police officers, and teachers
If it is not written down then it is not an official rule

The Troop has a relationship with the local state representative. He comes once every year or so and talks to the scouts and he is also invited to every Eagle Court of Honor. He takes care of getting the state proclamation as well.

We have a parent who is a teacher. She will talk with any of the boys who need this requirement. She tries to do it as a group, but if the Scout asks her, she will talk with him.

We have a parent who used to be a history teacher who will do this, but we encourage the boys to go and talk to their own history/social studies teacher or their council person or someone like that.

I prefer to see them take a little initiative, rather than have it served to them.
We do make them approach Jamie and ask him rather than him just setting up a time.

The SM can approve about anyone for this, such as someone in the military.

This is a pretty open ended requirement. It is more important that you get someone who will engage the Scouts rather than the standard adult droning on to a bunch of Scouts. Being a retired soldier, I am partial to a military speaker. Sources are the National Guard / Reserve, recruiting stations, college ROTC.

Our Scoutmaster usually steers the scouts towards one of the parents who works for the city.

I have a friend who is an elected member of the Zoning and Planning Commission who my son got approval to talk to.

There is usually several people available at summer camp handle this also.

First Class Requirement #5

Postby mmorrisbsa » Mon Nov 06, 2006 1:11 pm

This is all about using your resources. Within any troop , there will undoubtedly be teachers, lawyers, or others who can be considered civic leaders. All you have to do is ask. The worst possible answer you'll get is no, and you move on. Most will be thrilled to be asked. We try to reach out and make this special for our kids; we have had state representatives, federal judges, and other "luminaries" talk to the boys on this subject.

what about using the principle of the school they go to? most people who have been elected or hold a position of responsiablity within any city or county will step up to bat for any scout troop. a few years ago I had a chaplain of the local police force lined up to speak but he called me a few hours before the meeting and told me he couldnt be there that night because in the county I live in had three sheriffs deputys shot. 1 was killed at the scene. 1 later passed away at the hospital about 30 days later. the last one is still alive and back working again. main problem was that I did not know the chaplain but I knew all three of the deputys so I was called to find out if there was going to be a meeting that night. The answer was yes because the scouts didnt know any of these men. was it hard? yes but when you deal with kids then we all must remember they must come first.

I am a teacher and handle this one for our troop. I meet with each boy individually for a short discussion. The SM and I both let them know they can complete this requirement with me. However, I don't keep bugging individual boys about it. They need to come to me and ask to go over it when they are ready to get it signed off. I think a bit of initiative on the part of the scout to complete these types of requirements is important.
