How Many Eagle Palms?

Inventing is to be issued on June 17th, and Robotics is due to be issued early next year. So we'll be at 129 from June 17th until Robotics is issued, then 130 after that.

How real is the June 17th date?

Thanks. Looks like the start date should be 15 May. Seen the "official" requirements?

The EARN date will be June 17.

The START date of May 15 is only for those 25 Scouts in Boston.

And, yes, I've seen, but will not post until they're official, what are the apparent final requirements.

BTW, the total number of available merit badges will drop to 125 on 1/1/2011, since the 4 Historic badges will be gone then. Then it'll go up to 126 when Robotics is released, not 130 as I stated earlier.

But now that I think about it, there is a way around this. Do you know merit badges are not retired!?!?!?!? If you can find a counselor, find a book that has the requirements, and find the badge you can earn some that are not officially listed right now. Even now some scouts are earning Bee Keeping as an example. That badge was taken off the list over 10 years ago. So I guess if you really tried you might be able to earn MORE THAN 20 palms!!!!! Now that would be something.

No it is NOT TRUE!! Here's a direct quote from the Guide to Advancement:

7.0.4.4 Discontinued Merit Badges
Scouts may not begin working on discontinued merit badges. If actual effort has already begun by the time discontinuation becomes effective, and work actively continues, then the badge may be completed and can count toward rank advancement, but presentation of the badge itself will be subject to availability. It is a misconception that discontinued merit badges may be earned as long as the patch and requirements can be found.

(Emphasis added.)
Given that there are now 128 merit badges, the maximum number of palms is 21 (7 Silver Palms - 105 merit badges above the 21 required for Eagle))

That's a real shame. Here and the boys had their hearts set on Bookbinding MB.

Truthfully, our senior-most Scouter earned it as a youth. Now that we are in the age of the Kindle I don't suppose there would be much call for the skill any longer.
