Matt it is Simple as that. Swim it like I do and I am 60. Same as when I take folks hiking. Keep up with me or I will leave you. You would be sur prised the young dads sucking for air after a mile or two.

Even when I was in great shape for the Army, I was one of those that never could run two miles in ten minutes. I was labeld a Diesel Powered Soldier - because I could carry a little over half my body weight for a very long time, slow but always moving.

You're just built for power rather than speed. I'm like that too.
A few years ago I took my first swim test when we arrived at camp. I like to spend time in the pool, but I haven't practiced swimming a lap in perhaps thirty years. I jumped in and started doing my best crawl with alternate breathing and was flying through the water - for about half a lap. I though I might have to be rescued. I was terribly out of shape, and I couldn't coordinate the breathing with the strokes. I rolled over and finished with a back crawl (in a strong manner, of course) breathing at my leisure.

I reccommend the weekly mile swim exercise routine. Even better, the 3x/week mile swim routine. I've always hated running, and my knees don't care for the abuse.
