Scout Badge to First Class

Postby JazerNorth » Thu Apr 28, 2005 7:06 am

My Troop has the same issues. Our younger scouts seem to struggle in getting their rank requirements completed before 12 years old. It seems the parents do not understand scouts very well and only want their boys to participate becuase they know that it is good for them. I, with the help of lots of online resources, created the following groupings to help the leaders plan to do the rank requirements. If you take 2 weeks to complete each, you can do it within a year. Some groupings will take longer than 2 weeks, but you will still get it done in a year.

EDIT: Let me clarify - If the boys want to do it, which it is their group and responsibility, then the leader can use this plan.

You can get the form from http://www.jaynorth.net/downloads/Scout ... _Class.pdf -- NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Hope that helps.

Maybe it is how the parents were trained when their boys were in Cubs.
I moved 6 boys up two years ago this coming Dec. On those 6, 5 have stayed in the troop. Only one of those have not made 1st Class. And the only thing that he lacks is the requirements for summer camp which he will get this summer. (bad grades kept him from going last year).
Once the boys get into the troop it is really their responsibility to earn the requirements. The 4 new boys that crossed over in Feb. are all almost complete with Tenderfoot. I think that if you have a good troop advancement program the boys will easily earn 1st Class in their first year. Kevin earned his in Feb. And will complete Star in June.

Unfortunately my youngest didn't get to experience a WEBELOS II Den. He was a lone Cub Scouter with the troop for a year. He knows what he needs to do and is doing it.

It is always harder for Lone Scouts. We had three boys do their OA Ordeal this past weekend. Last night one came to me and ask if he could help with the new boys on their rank. I said of course. He and the other 2 took the boys that are working on Tenderfoot to a difffernet room and started working with them. Before the meeting was over they came to me and wanted me to come in. He had the new boys show how to do the Heimlick, and discribe posion ivy, oak and shumack. They also had worked on knots. I was very pleased. My Kevin was one of the OA boys. He said on the way home that part of OA is helping in your troop.
I think that most of the time the boys learn faster from each other.
I was very proud of all of them.

Well technically he was not a lone scout. However, he had no peers and participated in troop activities with his brothers.
