Age Requirement for first class?

When a group takes of in the front like that: you in fact have two groups that leave the starting point at the same time. I would point out that he needs to keep the required number of adult leaders with him and let him go. Then I would concerntrate on making sure the the second group was properly led. If I did not catch up by time to make camp, so be it. The second group will get more out of the trip, both in fun & skills.

If you force the SM to stay with the second group he would probally be a pain in the rear (no pun intended).

Having said that. The trip leader is responsible to the whole group & not doing what is fun for him.

Get your unit commissioner and District Adv Chairman involved. Such arbitrary rules are in violation of BSA policy and if any Scout appeals any rank denial/hold on those grounds, the appeal will be approved. You can appeal all the way to National.

The other posts about first class in the first year is absolutely correct. We are having a similar problem inour troop. the only saving grace is the one boys dad is the District Training Chair and he knows the rules.

The SM was making a beef about the scout who joined early since he earned Arrow of Light and progressed quickly. They did not believe the scout didthe requirements,so the scout re-did them just to prove it.

SM also told me my son was getting MB he did not earn,I told him otherwise and suggested he learn the program. He made 1st class in a year and a week and has earned 15 MB. SM tried holding up STAR we went round and round. I did let the District know whats going on. I was going to pull my son but I feel its time the SM goes. He is not trained and tries doing his own thing wiht nno regard to BSA policies and procedures.

I think a lot of SM's are holding boys back all over the nation do to not being trained. I know after going to training just getting back into scouts that a lot has changed and a lot of SM's are against what has changed or don't even know a lot of the new ways in scouting.

Two reasons for that:
1) many SMs think they can do whatever they want because it's "their" troop
2) many leaders don't keep up with changes
