Percentage Of Boys Who Recieve Certain Ranks

Postby Greg » Tue Jul 17, 2007 6:11 pm

Well, we always hear only about 4% of all boyscouts receive the Eagle award. What about the other ranks? I know it is an accomplishment to receive each rank, but does anyone know what the percentages are about for boys that eventually reach Life, Star, First Class, Second Class, and Tenderfoot?

I've heard it was 1% for Eagle Scout. My info could be dated.

You'll see 1-5%, depending on the source. Check the article "Eagle Scout (Boy Scouts of America)" on http://en.wikipedia.org

Do they base this % on boys that join cub scouts /boy scouts or just on the % of boys that join boy scouts?

Just the percentage of boy scouts. You can't earn boy scout ranks as a cub scout.

I kept records of this years ago in a scout troop I was associated with.
I came up with figures like this:
Scout- 95%
Tenderfoot- 90%
2nd class- 75%
1st class- 60%
Star- 50%
Life- 30%
Eagle- 2 %
Remember, this is just from a single troop, and it was hardly a statistically accurate study.

Hmm... My troop would be:

Scout- 100% (every Scout who joins gets Scout rank that night)
Tenderfoot- 95%
Second Class- 95%
First Class- 90%
Star- 80%
Life- 75%
Eagle- 50%

My troop has a lot of Eagles. Not many boys graduate without attaining Eagle.

swim4lyfe - I would be interested to know about how many scouts are in your troop, and what is the average age of the scouts when they earn Eagle?

We have around 80 active. Most join as soon as they cross over. The average age of the Scouts has been around 15.

Would you say you have about 40 Eagles a year?

No, more like 7 a year, and growing. We've had five this year alone. In fact I'd say the Eagle percentage is more like 60-65 at my troop.

How do you work that? We haven't ever been able to since one of the requirements is to complete the "Protect you Children..." pamphlet exercises with parent or guardian. To do that right takes at least a half hour, probably more like an hour.

Just wondering.

We just do I guess :P Our troop gives out free Scout books to new Scouts, so the parents/Scouts can go through it that night and decide if they really want to be in Scouts. If so, they immediately do the Protect your Kids segment before moving on to the Scout Skills section of the Scout rank. If the parent has any additional questions, the Scoutmaster and another ASM deal with them while the kids is learning. Almost always the Scout earns the rank that night.
