What type of service would count toward this? My son will be serving at a salad luncheon later this summer at church and would be able (if it will count) to earn a majority, if not all, of his service hours toward his Star rank. His only "pay" for this event is getting to bring home leftovers

So long as he gets approval in advance from his SM, that should be an appropriate service project.

Thanks! Just wanted to make sure it wan't out of the question before he checks with the scoutmaster We're having to plan things far in advance since our SM has not been able to be at meetings for about the last month due to work schedule.

I agree, since his service will benefit the church it should count. If he is looking to count the time, it is important to get SM approval before he does the project.

Just make sure the SM approves this first.
The troop we moved into has a written rule that states service hours can only be earned if all members of the Patrol or Troop have the opportunity to work.

Well, we got the official approval at our cook-off the other night. I did help explain the even since my son's point of view is that he gets to run the commercial dishwasher which he seems to be enthralled with! LOL However, can't get him to get nis dishes near the dishwasher at home.

This Fall three of my Scouts server as Jr. Staff at an Outdoor Skills Training. They taught fire building. The SM for the training, also District Training Chairman) gave each of them a note to give to their SM giving them 20 hours of service each. Believe me they earned every bit of it. They worked hard.
Our Troop SM had approved their helping at the training. Basically anything that the SM will approve before hand can count as Service Hours. Kevin worked at Camp Carter helping with Katrine victims three weekends. He planned games and a story time for the children. This summer one of my boys helped with a hospice group that deals with children. OUr city has a Crud Truck Clean up twice a year and several of our boys help with that. The main thing is that your community benifits from the service and the scout does not benifit financially.
your community is a tree. You are either a leaf that feeds it or mistletoe that suckes it dry. Be sure you are always a leaf.
