I am a Life scout in the process of the completing the communications mb. One of the first things i finished was the troop site.

A couple of tips on building the web site:

1. Build it on Tripod (http://www.tripod.com), or Yahoo! Geocities, or another web site based program. I build our troop site on tripod, (if u want to view it it's at http://troop596.tripod.com).

2. make sure u check out the boy scout regulations that are on the bsa site. Leave out the last names of the scouts and when recruiting, use the same procedures.

once u get into building the site, i actually had a lot of fun doing it. talk to your SPL or Scoutmaster, they might give u some information to post on the site.

There are actually no BSA regulations regarding unit web sites. There are guidelines, though. Pius posted some good tips.

Also, checkout 250free.com. Lots of space & ftp capabilities.

The biggest concern is that Boy Scouts are protected by the Federal Government. Meaning that you cannot legally print a youth's name, address, picture, etc. without the written (just as it means) consent of the parent. All Boy Scouts are Youth. Therefore, you shouldn't publish names at all without the consent of the Parent. This is NOT a BSA rule, but a Federal Government Law! I maintain an online scout tracker that can be used by other troops. I make sure the security of the tracker is as best as possible, but still leave the final security up to the individual users. The software I use can be used behind SSL connections, so that only secure and valid users can access the scout's information. Make sure you follow all laws regarding youth. Youth Protection Training (YPT), Safety First.

Would that mean that any picture of a youth cannot be used for any purpose such as slideshow to potential/current scouts, posters at events, as well as web pages would require written permission from a parent - even without names or anything?

Not exaclty. As long as the viewers of the website cannot identify the youth in the picture, then you can use the photo. You just can't have any way to identify youth on the Internet.
