Placement of Other Awards?

Postby Kobalt » Sat Jun 25, 2005 6:06 pm

A quick question from a Scout who's confused: Where can we place badges such as the Fifty-Miler Award, Historic Trails, etc.? I've thought of possibly on the back of the MBsash, but that would seem to get a little cluttered, and have no real order. What is the proper placement for these items? Thanks!

After I was done with them I would glue them on to this blanket I have. It now houses all of the patches I have recieved from wherever I went. Its pretty big so it doesnt clutter easy :)

Patchin' things up

....or, where to put 'em? Yeah, these kinds of emblems are usually for patch blankets, vests, jackets, backpacks, shadow boxes, etc. Some of these are considered "equipment decoration" by BSA. Other suggestions (from them) is to consider making these into a neckerchief slide. :)

Hah, okay. I wasn't sure if there was any official place to put them or not. Thanks!

Only MBs go on the MB sash. Nothing, including signatures, is supposed to go on the OA sash.

I highly recommend to NEVER glue any patch -- it will ruin it if you ever try to take it off and put it on something else and will be worthless for collecting purposes. You may think this inconsequential now, but for your descendants, this could be a big deal. I always sew mine vertically through the rolled edge (I HATE laser cut patches). I do not pull the thread around the outer edge, but up and down in the rolled edge portion.

I suggest putting other patches on a patch vest, blanket, etc, in a shadow box, or cool dry place safely stored away. Keep them away from smokers too.

Temporary insignia (50 Miler, etc.) may be worn on the back of the merit badge sash as per the BSA Uniform Inspection Sheet:

The same rule is in the Insignia Guide, too.

The 50 Miler Award is an equipment decoration, not a temporary insignia.

I think I know, but please define the difference.

The application for the 50 miler and Historic Trails insignia specifically states "(NOTE: Embroidered and leather awards are not worn on uniforms but may be attached to tents, packs, blankets.)". The back of the sash and the temporary insignia position on the pocket are ON the uniform, so the patches should not be worn there. Similarly, the mile swim, scuba, etc. patches are specified for wear on swim trunks, not the uniform.

Yes, you are absolutely and technically correct. However, I sure wish it would be allowed on the BACK of the sash.
Having the 1 mile swim is difficult if you are wearing a speedo, even the long-legged ones due to the stretchiness of the fabric not to mention that chlorine fades this patch.
My son sewed his 50 miler to his backpack and was very proud when others noticed and asked him about it whenever he went on a hike. That sparked a lot of conversation and helped inspire future opportunity for challenging outings.
