Robotics Merit Badge

Postby spadercool » Sun Mar 06, 2005 10:32 pm

What about a robotics merit badge. FIRST would sponsor the merit badge requirements and Chief Delphialready has a forum dedicated to this topic

that sounds like a great idea. Personally, I would love to earn a badge like that.

1) Earn the eletronics Merit Badge (for understanding of how eletronics works)

2) Explain the history of Robotics

3) Explain how robotics has affected everyday life

4) Do one of the following
a) Visit a place that uses robots
b) create a robot and program it to peform simple actions (I had in mind useing Lego Mindstorm since the program is very easy to work with)

Sounds good. Submit it to National.

Has this been submitted to National? The company I currently work for is heavy into robotics in the educational area. They have some pretty good programs and someone here is always tinkering with robotics. we actually support a local HS team in FIRST.

If anyone is interested, please look at www.intelitek.com

One problem.... Lego Mindstorms price in excess of $200 dollars. There may be a scout that can't afford the Mindstorms set and still want to do the MB.

I dont know much about robotics, so i may have no room to talk in this subject, however, the requirements seem to sparce. usually if its a in depth merit badge like this, there usually are at least a half dozen requirements.

For 4, you could possibly include something about doing something at the place that uses robots. Something in the lines of that.
Dont forget to add that all time favorite requirement, that usually follows all the hobby merit badges.

Explain how Robotics can be used in the job field. .. or someting along those lines.

I can't ever see a Robotics MB simply because there are way too few people who'd get it. Electronics is a rarely-earned MB and even fewer people are interested in Robotics. Like it or not, the frequency with which an MB is earned is how BSA determines which ones to drop.
