Adult Knots

Postby EagleBoy62204 » Tue Oct 18, 2005 2:34 pm

I know there are several to earn, and since I am a new adult leader (19 yrs old) i want to keep up with earning things, and the knots are the only thing i know i can still earn. I have three right now, my eagle, arrow of light, and the scout religious knot.

Is there any documentation on what knots are available and the requirements to earn these? If so where?

There is a published list of requirements for the Adult Training Award, and it is awarded when you have completed those requirements. Our Council even hands out a little tracking card with the requirements on it.

The adult religious award is the most bizarre in Scouting. IIRC, the only way you can earn it -- and it does have specific requirements -- is to not ask for it. Strange...

You can see the Protestant version requirements at: http://www.praypub.org/images/GodService2_sm.gif. The home page is www.praypub.org.

The reference to usscouts is perhaps the best "site" for information. It's been updated with the new ones. Several new ones were introduced at National Meeting this year. I've already seen one Scouter wearing one (Boyce), except it was on backwards. And many knots are on backwards, in real life, and on various websites, haha. Stick with usscouts as some private sites only list a few of the knots, and then are never updated.

Yes there are some you'll qualify for if you do the tenure and training requirements. Others, as you read, are bestowed on you from other Scouters or other organizations that support Scouting. We always remind ourselves and others, to not seek the knot, haha. If you earn one, then you should feel proud to wear it. But don't ever recommend yourself as qualifying for a special recognition, as it disqualifies you. And remember the "knot" is like a Military ribbon in that it isn't the Award....it only represents it. And you don't have to wear them, but wear them per Insignia Guide...keeping the distance from your stars if worn also.

Now, if "web" or moderators permit it, I can tell you the best privately produced book on all the knots, is a guy in my State. I don't have his '05 booklet, but it depicts the new ones. It depicts all versions of each knot, so it's a nice history book too. It also contains images of all the devices for the knots as well. Yes, there are requirements listed also, but depend on the official ones on your Progress Record for that. 8)

Thanks. I wanted to ask first, out of respect to any policies on posting. Now, I have left this gentleman a note, asking if he'll post or allow me to post the details.

While I'm waiting, I met him first through ebay, so it might be possible to see one there (but I won't promise that). Then, I met him at our Sea Badge Conference here in the Southern Region. I enjoy collecting (too many things) Scouting items, and enjoy the history of Scouting. So this was a nice find for me. Other Scouters have some nice work (sites also) on history of patches and the early knots. This one just seemed a complete work on the subject. Except....now I need the newest one, haha.
