Eagle Project Funding

Postby Lynda J » Mon Jan 30, 2006 11:10 am

Somewhere at some training I took I made notes that the benefiting org should not fund an Eagle Project. I have a dad that has questioned where that is written. I can't find it anywhere. This young man is going to do some shelves in a daycare run by his church. THe church will be doing some other remodeling in another part of the church in the near future and have suggested that he work on his project at the same time and they will furnish the material. Any input on this would be helpful. I have a call into our District Advancement but have been told he is out of town.

I really cannot ever seing that in writing. It may be a "local" rule.

Neither of my son's project would have been done if that were an official rule.

One did trail work in the National Park and the park service furnished the trail mix to rebuild the eroded sections and some of the tools needed to compact the material after it was put in place.

The other rebuilt a bridge that had washed out in flooding. Although he got donations of some of the hardware needed to clamp the deck to the support beams, the land conservancy supplied the lumber.

Actually, as I think about it, most projects I have had any involvement in have been funded, at least in part, by the benefitting organization.

All of the projects that my boys, and even I, have done are funded totally by the receiving organization. Or atleast, the organization found the funds. The boys shouldn't be doing a fund raiser to do their eagle project.

There is no requirement that states where funding comes (or does not come) from. If the benefitting organization wants to fund the project that is great. If the scout wants to fund it out of his own (or parents) pocket that also is acceptable.
If it is not written down then it is not an official rule

those ugly "Troop Rules" are rearing their head again! I have an idea lets immediately disband any troop that does this stuff and send the boys to other troops. If that is not an option then the leadership of the troop MUST be replaced.

Until National clearly informs councils, districts, and troops that this is not allowed they will continue doing so.

Thanks guys. I didn't really think that it was a policy because I couldn't find it anywhere but I didn't want this kid to get to the approval committee and get kicked back. This way I have more info.

If you look at the rank requirement in the advancement hand book, it does not address funding. It seems to me that adding a requirement as to where the funding comes from would be changing the requirement.

I must clarify that I said "shouldn't" not "couldn't", which means it is my personal oppinion.

I spoke with our DAC last night. He confirmed that there are no restrictions on funding. He did say that they like to see a boy raise some of the funds because of the leadership skills learned but do not require it.

ii have seen funding come in both ways. it doesnt matter taht much. i think mostly what the DC, and the eagle BOR is looking for is direct leadership.
