Fundraising for advancement

Postby Mad Dog » Tue Jan 31, 2006 8:54 am

Our troop just started it's annual fundraising project. The scouts were all given written instructions to follow. One of the items read that fundraising could be considered when the scout was ready for advancement. I can't believe the BSA has any rules that says that a boy is required to raiseraise for advancement. My son will do the best he can but I don't expect him to be able to raise a great deal of money.

There is no place that fund raising is considered for advancement. You might say that scout spirit includes helping raise funds for the troop, but even that is iffy.

I would question a kid that plain doesn't help fund raise as to why he thinks he should benefit from the other guys work, but you can't hold him back just for that reason.

I have a boy whose parents do not believe in fund raising. Not even a little bit. They have their son work at home or at a neighbors to pay for his scouting. If fund raising were a policy, what would happen with this boy? He is one very good scout, and does everything well, just doesn't believe in fund raising.

A troop CAN NOT add any requirement for advancement. This is adding a requirement. That said. Fund raising is a part of the necessities of having a troop unless you have some big sugar daddy that has deep pockets and totally funds the troop. In order to be able to purchase badges, rank advancement, supplies there has to be money. So troops do fund raising. I have one boy whose mother write us a check each year because she does not like for her son to do fund raising. That is her thing. I think boys learn from fund raising activities. They learn how to talk to people, they learn how to present themselves. They can also earn the Salesmanship Merit Badge.
