Any recommendations on NY Metro Summer camps

Postby DadScout » Thu Aug 25, 2005 3:51 pm

Does anyone have any positive feedback on any summer camps within about 125mi (2.5hrs) of NYC? Our troop is looking to mix things up next year and want's to try a different camp. Looking for good aquatics program, the traditional shooting sports, good first year program but yet not a MB mill. Any feedback would be appreciated, Thanks.

My troop for the first time went to Citta Scout Reservation in Barneget, NJ. This is at exit 67 off the Garden Sate Parkway. It is a small camp compared to some others that we have been too but they have a great program (not a MB mill) and the food tasted good.
If it is not written down then it is not an official rule

T305SPL - A ? or two:
Are you recommending all of them for summer camp or just letting me know the ones around there.? If you're recommending them are you posing in order of preference?
We've been to Workcoemen, luv'd it. Great staff and program there. Also Onteora, but 1st year after they restarted program and there were a few kinks.
I heard Onteora had a COPE or climbing wall incident that shut that activity down for a week or more this yr. And Treasure Is. had some flooding issue this season. I can't confirm the Treasure Is on the www at all & will have to call the council to make sure. Sure was rainy this spring in the TriState area so I can see the Delaware River getting testy.
Thanks for your feedback

Citta Scout Reservation

Postby ScoutcraftNick » Wed Sep 14, 2005 4:25 pm

I can only be biased, but as a staff member at Citta Scout Reservation, I highly recommend it. If you have any questions about programs, costs, activities, etc, feel free to ask here in this thread or email me, i'd be happy to describe it to you.

two suggestions

Postby kvd » Thu Oct 06, 2005 12:44 pm

Patriots path Council (www.ppbsa.org) has two good summer camp programs in northern NJ: Camp Winnebago and Camp Allamuchy. They're gearing more towards Allamuchy (close to the intersection of Route 80 and 206 in Stanhope, NJ) becoming the Boy Scout camp, and Winnebago becoming Cub Scouts. Allamuchy has the normal shooting and aquatics programs, good First Year program.

My troop went to Ten Mile River last year, Camp Ranachqua. Best experience we've had in about 5 years. The boys voted to go back this year! Excellent staff, excellent program. Contains some high adventure outings as well (climbing, biking, COPE) for older scouts too.

Camp Roosevelt in Southern New Jersey Council is an excellent choice. Ive served on that staff for 3 years now and i absolutly love the camp. We have an excellent COPE program. we have a rough rider program for first year scouts also. we are working towards getting a technology program but its moving slow until we get our new multipurpose building. this summer we may have a ham radio day which is going to be exciting

These two camps are about 3 to 4hrs from you. Camp Barton and Camp Tuscarora. Camp Barton has had troop from Huntington, NY before, This year a troop from Florida is coming up. Camp Tuscarora has a climbing wall, Camp Barton is located on Cayuga Lake, which gives it a great water front for the water merit badges. Down size is, that the water is cold because Cayuga lake is part of the finger lakes of NY. The web site is WWW.badenpowellcouncil.org click on camping

Both are great camps but my son's troop has been going to Camp Barton for the past 15 years. My son has gone there for seven years. He took four merit badges each year and with some work on his part completed every one except water skiing. He has never skied before.
