Help! I am helping my son plan a patrol campout. He wants to provide the opportunity for boys to make a useful camp gadget to meet an advancement requirement. (I think it's first class?) Anyway, we are having a hard time coming up with ideas. Anyone have a great idea for a useful gadget that would be a good group project? I understand each boy has to make their own, but my son thought he could plan an idea and have directions/materials available. I appreciate any suggestions! I just discovered this forum and I am so happy to see all the great info here.

Build a friction table. There is a friction bridge in the Troop Planning book in the Engineering part. But our boys are down sizing it into a table to sit the water jugs on.

Tripods are always good, to hold pots and stuff, also this boy in my troop attached a thick stick to a tree for a trashbag.

It is requirement #6c make a useful camp gadget using lashings. Our scouts usually make a table.

If you turn to pages 144 and 145 in the hand book there are many different ideas. I myself made a kitchen helper and a tripod dutch oven holder. Its completely up to the scout what they make but it most use at least one lashing from the book and the scoutmaster most approve it. I dont recommend tying anything to living plants without land owner permission.

You could do a tripod to hold a dutch oven over a fire or a wash stand or connecttwo tripods with a rope to create a clothes line. Those are the ones we did at our annual Klondike. You could also use lashings to complete a floating flag pole.

In the scout book there is a full 2 pages of just camp gadgets. Hang on and I will post the page 144-145. Flag pool, cooker, etc.
