Council JLTC (NYLTC) Questions

Here is a question for you all.

Does your Council hold an annual week long Junior Leadership Training Conferenc (now known as National Youth Leadership Training Conference -- and often having a local program name as well)?

And if you do, how well is it attended? And, how is it promoted and/or communicated to both adult Troop leadership and the Scouts?

Just wondering what other Councils do and how successful they are.

SFC has "eagle claw. They announce it and give each troop a flyer at the district round table.

Atlanta Area Council just completed its NYLT. Two one week sessions. roughly 80 per week consisting of 2 troops of 6 patrols (large council). The scouts that went from our troop got a lot out of it. The course presenters were all scouts.

In our troop, it is mostly promoted by past attendees. We have sent at least two for the last five years. Our districts promotes it by round table, district news letter & word of mouth. The best promotion I saw was one of the staff scouts came & spoke at round table.

Our council runs a JLT week at our summer camp. Basically, JLT replaces provo for the week.

Our council had 2 Silver Mocassin courses and a Takachin (OA NYLT) on the schedule this year. I don't remember when they were to be held. In past years I know they have had no problem filling the 1 of each course offered.

Our council does not do very well in their marketing for NYLT. They require their youth staff to promote it among their troops and friends, (I think there is some number they are required to recruit). Other that that, there is nothing. I NEVER hear anything about it at district roundtables, or at council scout shops, etc. I did hear it mentioned at Woodbadge last fall. They usually have a small booth at the Scout-O-Rama (scout expo in May), but by then the course is full and it is too late to sign up.

In 7 years as SM, I have only seen 2 boys attend JLT. I have suggested it for a few others, but they haven't gone. I think the pricetag held many of them back.

And there is another question for you all. What is the cost of the JLTC/NYLTC in your Council?

I think ours has varied over the years. I think last year it was 10 days for $265.

They are charging $140 for the 6 day NYLT this year. I believe the OA one is $125.

AAC is $185 for one week. Any way you look at it, its a deal. If your troop can afford it, sponsoring one or two scouts is well worth it.

I don't really know how well advertised our course has been in the psat. My older son never went as it was always the same week as our family bike trip vacation.

The younger son went three years ago as the first from our troop for a long time. (The week had changed). He got a lot out of it and was on staff the next year.

Since then it changed from JLTC to NYLT and went back to the same week. He gets an offer of a staff position, but the biking is more enticing to him.

Since he went we have had 4 other boys complete the class and say they got a lot out of it. We have three or four boys going this year too.

Our Council will offer scholarships of 1/3 the cost that all of these boys have qualified for - I think anyone who asks gets one. The troop pays 1/3 and the parents pay 1/3. The cost is about $180-200.

My council, Patriot's Path in New Jersey, hosts two NYLT courses a year. Each course has two troops of 6 patrols each with 6 to 7 scouts per patrol. This year, we didn't have full courses so we only had 134, or so, participants. The cost is $265. My council has a long history of running one of the best courses, recognized regionally as well as nationally (so I've been told). I have staffed 2 years of these courses with 60 fellow scouts and scouters. We also encourage our council's youth leaders to take advantage of national training at Philmont in the form of NAYLE (formerly NJLIC). Our council's NYLT Course Director and senior staff members are responsible for publicizing the course to bring in participants. This past year I attended many of my district's Round Tables and gave a presentation to tell leaders what their scouts will take home if they attend. I also went to some council wide activities as well as individual troops to ensure that we could reach the greatest number of scouts we could. If anybody has any questions on NYLT or NAYLE there are websites I can give you and I'd be willing to share my presentations regarding either course with anybody who's interested. Just drop me a message or send me an email. All I can say is that the scouts who attend these programs will return home better leaders.

Greater Pittsburgh Council offers the one week NYLT each summer, it is called Twin Arrow. Our cost is around $160 for the course, and it appears to be well attended.

Within my Troop, I have had one scout go each year. I announce it several times, but have only had one scout go through each year. Additionally our Troop Committee awards a full scholarship for those scouts who successfully complete the course.

Greater Cleveland offers this once a year as well.

My older son never had an opportunity to go as it was always the same week in June as our family bike tour vacation, and he did not want to give that up.

My younger son went the first year it moved to August and went back as staff the next year.

Now it is back to the original June week and he is declining requests to return as staff. The June week is hard for the kids that play baseball too, since it is the middle of their season.

We sent 3-4 boys from our troop last year.

We pick the boys we most want to see get this experience and specifically encourage them to go. A general announcement is made as well before this and the ones who are actually wanting to commit to going are usually the ones we think should be going. The troop pays a third, the family pays a third and Council has camperships available for the last third. Never had a kid turned down for those.
