No camp for me. decided this year im doing JROTC camp instead.
We will be doing the following, and then some:
Physical training
rappelling
small bore rifles
archery
cope style stuff
Drill and ceremony
orienteering

I missed out last year for the AT trip. ITs actualy held at a scout camp and most of the ativities are scouting related.

edit

Will only cost me $20 that’s up from $10 the year before and $4 before that.

Scout Master's Merit Badge. The only one open to over 18 year old scouts.

I think I'm going to take Swimming and maybe Wilderness Survival. I never have been much of a swimmer, but I think I can swim well enough to get it finished. I have to qualify a couple targets for rifle so I'll probably just head down to the range and shoot in open shooting times or I may just take the class over again. That type of thing it probably wouldn't hurt to take the class part of it over again.

Other than that I intend to wander camp and check up on the younger Scouts in the troop.

Just remember the buddy system when wandering.

Camp Geronimo, Grand Canyon Council has a great Merit Badge for Scoutmasters. It is called, "I did enough." I found the toughest requirement to be the Hammock Test. Get caught laying in your hammock in the middle of the day.

I suggested adding "Let your SPL do it."

well I hate to admit it but the idea of spending summer camp doinfg the scoutmasters badge sounds boring as it has for the last few years. I will once again go through the BSA Lifeguard program AGAIN. not being disrespectful to you old guys but there are kids at the waterfront that needs to be help along with the wisdom and knowledge of some of us older people. not really but it sounded good to me   the main reason is I have enjoyed the water for many years and I want to help anyone who has the fear of it.

The one thing i miss at summer camp when i was a boy was doing the badges, and how many i could do before the week ended.

This year as i will be 20 (8 days!!!), I will probably be helping the kids who chose not to take any badges with building the gateway, and many structures that we plan on building to awe other troops into submission. That and helping the next spl out in plans for the following year, along with getting him motivated to win the spirit award if there is any.

I also will enjoy the part where i do nothing for a day or two, along with visiting my aunts new house since its only a mile outside the boy scout camp.

this years camp will be nice.

Thanks for the wakeup call. I believe I will spend my week at the waterfront also. (If you have read some of the other threads regarding swimming, I am a big fan of everyone being able to swim).

Thanks,

actually, im not quite sure yet. at our camp they schedule your MB's. for each time frame you pick a 1st choice, and a 2nd choice. i think i got things like rowing, art, maybe some indian lore. i dont really remember off hand. pretty much everything im doing is jsut easy stuff. the last two years combined, i believe i have completed 19 or 20 MB's. this year, since im REALLY close to eagle, im taking a break.

i figure ill help the younger kids alot. and if i got any free time, i can also get kids working on their books some too ( as im the troop guide). mostly now, i just wanna get the younger guys to move on up, and theres no way that they can do that if nobodys willing to help and be a mentor to them.

I just heard from the director of the camp where our guys are going, and 4 of them now need to choose at least 1 different merit badge than they originally signed up for. They had already completed the pre-reqs, but the person teaching the badge had to back out of summer camp. One of the boys, (my son) is completely bummed about not being able to take the Photography merit badge. I just hope that for whatever they choose, they can complete any needed pre-reqs.

at least you know that the MB wont be available BEFORE you go to camp. at our camp, they went back to MB sceduling, so for each time slot on the sgin up sheet you had to put 2 mb choices- 1st and 2nd. so doing the pre-req's is almost pointless.

Hopefully at Monday nights meeting, our guys will be covering some of the pre-reqs. One of our ASM's is a MBC for several shooting sports and he is supposed to cover those with the boys. I have this funny feeling, that there will be several partials from this summer.

i second that feeling. most years our troop comes home with probably 98% completed MB's. i think this summer we're definitely gonna change that. :(
