How to identify a new charter organization?

Postby scout_momx2 » Fri Jul 28, 2006 9:26 pm

I'm been asked by a group of older Scouts and former Scouts to create a new unit--probably Troop or Crew. Our area doesn't have any active Crews, so that's what I'm leaning toward.

How does one go about finding a potential Charter Organization? We can't approach the schools because of a hostile superintendent. We have several Lutheran-based troops, a Catholic troop, a Presbyterian troop, several Methodist units, and a non-sectarian troop that's dying. There aren't any "critter" or fraternal organizations in town, nor an American Legion, VFW post, or sporting goods store

A local Methodist church already charters 3 units--2 packs and a troop. I've considered approaching them but hesitate because it might be "too much" for one church to handle.

I've been working with our DE. He gave me the name of a potential contact, whom I've since spoken with, but she didn't seem thrilled with the idea. She did offer to speak with other church leaders, though. I just wrote her a letter explaining the benefits of offering a scouting experience to members of her church and to the greater community.

I'd really appreciate any advice! :?:

Remember a Crew does not meet weekly. Usually quarterly But have many outside activities. This may help.

Venturing Crews are not just co-ed Troops.

Knowing the specialization or focus of the Crew/Ship will help. You can then look for organizations that have resources to support that focus.

BTW - how often a Crew will meet is up to its leadership, but BSA reccomends that Crews meet at least 2X per month.

Good Luck!

No, they are Not Co-ed troops they are a crew and a crew operates totally different than a Troop does. Yes BSA recommends certain meeting times BUT most of the Crews I have dealt with meet bi Monthly for an activity and quarterly for a "meeting". They also have a Planning conference at the beginning of the Year to plan all the activities in advance. The Advisers in a Crew have very little say in the Operation of the Crew.

I did not say that the adult Advisors decided the meeting frequency. I stated that is was up to the CREW leadership. Last time I looked, leadership in a Crew was by the YOUTH.

I'm not sure how the Crews in your area plan their bi-monthly trips if they only meet 4X per year. Most of the Crews by me meet at least once each month, many meet more than that.

Most of our local Venturing Crews have a weekly schedule, so it can vary.

But as far as finding a CO, or Partner...here is a growing idea. Some local Units have formed a "Friends of Unit so and so" and become the Chartered Partner in this way. Ask your DD/DE about it?
