POWDER HORN COURSE

Postby Guneukitschik » Mon Oct 04, 2004 3:30 pm

Has anyone attended a Powder Horn Course? There are a few in my area in 2005 and I was considering attending one?

Any comments about past courses would be appreciated!

This past summer, my council celebrated its first powder horn course. Even though I did not attend I know a couple of people that actually did and they have excellent reviews of the program. They had the chance to work out lots of outdoor activitis, much related to the requirements in the Ranger Medal. I'm planning on taking this course next year.

Sounds like Powderhorn will be a lot more fun than wood badge?

Is it strictly High Adventure outdoor stuff?

Is it more for Venturing or Boy Scouts??

As far as I know it is stricly outdoor stuff, but not necessarily high adventure. It is mainly related to the Ranger Award for young venturers. Themes like camping, cooking, first aid, aquatics (like canoeing), mountain biking, etc (and a little bit of high adventure of course).

Since its outdoor stuff, the skills that are practiced are useful for scouting and venturing, even though the program is designed for leaders in Venturing.

Adventures continue

8) Powderhorn is a lot about High Adventure. Participants get to do lots of hands on things, much as you would take your Crew out for....but, it's really more about exposing you to sources/resources for your Program at home. You get useful tips on finding "Counselors" which can guide or instruct your Crew. And I agree that it could benefit any Scouter to go through it. In fact, since we look for opportunities to help others....see if your special talent(s) would qualify you to be one of the Counselors for the course? I attended what I think was the first course in my State, and served as the First Aid Counselor also.
