Scout Webmaster Recognition

I am new to the forum and a new scoutmaster to boot. We have a scout who is responsible for maintaining the troop website. While there is no formal troop position for this I was wondering how other troops with scout webmasters recognize their contributions. Is it permissible to have two troop scribes? One scribe handles the PLC meeting and letter writing and the other is an "e-scribe" that handles the troop website? Any thoughts here?

I don't know if there are standards saying you can't have more than one scribe.

Webmaster is a perfectly valid position as well. The BSA doesn't sell a webmaster patch, but there are 'aftermarket' or 'unofficial' patches available. While webmaster is not one of the POSs listed to count for advancements, there is the other part of that requirement that says they can do a 'Scoutmaster assigned leadership project'. If you can't find the patch, let me know and I'll get the web address where you can purchase it.

I don't see a problem with two Troop Scribes. You need the leadership positions to accurately reflect what your Troop needs.

In my Troop given the amount of euipment we own, I have two Troop Quartermasters. Also had 2 Troop Guides (one for each new scout patrol) until one was asked to become ASPL.

If the Scout is providing leadership in this position, have the SPL appoint him as a Troop Scribe.

Nice patch. I would still record the postion as troop scribe or historian to save issues about POR for board of reviews.

I've seen multiple Quartermasters, so why not Scribes?

I think the troop can creat a "Position of Responsibility". Don't have my SM Handbook here but I think it states that the POR is one of the listed or one the SM assignes. And I think in this day and time this one would be a great one.

I have no problem with multiple scribes.

Webmaster would work as a leadership project as well.

The POR MUST be one of those listed. For STAR & LIFE only, the Scout may alternatively "carry out a Scoutmaster-assigned leadership project to help the troop", and Webmaster would fit in that category, BUT that CAN NOT be used for EAGLE.

As others have said, having him serve as a second Scribe or Historian is also quite legitimate.

Maybe it is time that BSA add a position related to Webmaster. As troops are getting more and more internet accessable maybe the time has come to add this position.

I have it, but have never worn it. I have too many other positions to have a blank spot on my sleeve for the 'spoof' position patch. I plan to sew it onto one of my uniform shirts when I have more shirts at Jamboree 2010.

There are many 'spoof' patches that I would never wear, because I feel that they detract from the dignity of the uniform and cheapen those that I worked hard to earn. I have several of them: Personal Fatness MB, Tent Burning MB, HTML Interpreter Strip, etc.

I have other 'spoof' patches that I do not feel detract from the dignity of the uniform nor cheapen the other honors I have received. They may not be official BSA, but they probably should be. I wear some of these with pride. (WoodBadge 'square knot', OA Vigil Honor 'square knot', 50-Miler square knot, BSA Lifeguard square knot, etc.) I even have some ideas of others that I want to have made and sell from my scouting website.
